| Well, Sean Young is still my #1 "hate to see" character. I was
rewinding a movie a few weeks ago on my VCR and she was on the Whoopi
Goldberg Show ("right, right!") and I remember thinking that if I
closed my eyes and just listened, it would be like eavesdropping on two
hyper-ego "I'm a woman and want to be respected" wannabe's. Whoopi is
someone I hate to watch unless she's in a movie. Her TV show is
definitely shown at a good time: all insomniacs, check her out and you,
too, can sleep!
The only movie I ever saw Young in where she actually seemed like an
actress instead of a stupid talentless bimbo was "The Boost" with James
Woods, about drug abuse. Very "feel bad" movie, I agree ... but good
acting. This was the movie in which Young, after its completion, went
totally cuckoo on Woods, sending voodoo dolls to his fiance and giving
press conferences on how every man she acted with "fell in love with
her" ... GAG me! And she's also the one who broke into the set of
Batman II dressed as Cat Woman after being rejected for the part, and
just recently crashed a post-Oscars party that she wasn't invited to.
Oh, I could go ON and ON!!! :-)

| Bruce Willis is high on my "can't stand" list. I was disgusted with the
way "Bonfire of the Vanities" was twisted in order to elevate his
character, a secondary one at best in the book, to the starring role.
Not sure if we can blame Bruce for that, but I do. Then again, that
movie was such a travesty after reading the wonderfully witty and
insightful book, that I came away resenting everyone who had anything
to do with the movie.

| I will avoid any movie with any of the following people in it:
1) Marlon Brando: I hated every scene he was in in the Godfather movies,
and I liked all the rest of the scenes. I deliberately walked in late
to Superman just to avoid the entire Krypton sequence with him in it.
I walked out of Apocalypse Now when they got to the base camp. I find
Brando to be the worst "Look at me, the great actor, bringing brilliance
to this lowly part, which of course I will win an Academy Award for, even
though the part itself would be nothing without my talent" in the book.
2) Jack Nicholson: Barely edged out by Brando for the worst person with the
attitude stated above. I think the best line to describe Nicholson was
given by Cher's character in The Witches of Eastwick (paraphrased from
memory, but I believe I have the gist of it) "How can anyone find you
attractive? You are a short, fat, repulsive pathetic little man". But
aside from that he can't act, either. All of the characters that he
plays are insane losers: Witches of Eastwick, One Flew Over the Cuckoo's
Nest, The Shining, Batman, and A Few Good Men (I mean, what insane lunatic
tells a panel of superior military officers, all of whom have security
clearances higher than his, all of whom have been in the military longer
than he has, all of whom are literally holding his career in their hands,
"You can't handle the truth". Only Nicholson could be that stupidly
arrogant). Makes you wonder (well, it doesn't make *me* wonder) whether
Nicholson is acting when he plays these unbelievable idiots.
3) Roseanne Arnold: She is not in competition with Brando and Nicholson for
that award, she just can't act, and her choice of characters stinks.
IMHO, of course...

| RE: .32
> How can you specifically set out to miss the beginning of an excellent
> movie? Like or dislike, the character and scenes set the pace for the
> movie!!
In the case of Superman, that was really three totally different movies.
The Krypton sequence (which in the previews had sets and costumes which were
cliches in 1950), the Smallville sequence (which as peaceful and lovely),
and the Metropolis sequence (the bulk of the movie), were three totally
unique and separate sequences that had nothing to do with each other. No
common actors, no common sets, no common story lines, and no either forward
or backward references from one sequence to the other (maybe with the minor
exception of Superman's frustration at Lois dying flashing back to his
frustration at his father dying).
So I would disagree that "the character and scenes set the pace". In many
movies what you say is true, but not (IMHO) for Superman I.
RE: .34 (How can you say Brando and Nicholson are bad actors)
Well, because I have never seen them act. I have seen them portray
themselves, and I have seen them chew the scenery so blatantly that I was
slapped with the fact that I was watching a movie (as opposed to losing
myself in a storyline and being involved with characters who are being
well-played by good actors), but I have never seen them bring a character
to life or to get me involved with a character, and I have *never* seen
them where they value the character they are playing more than their own
bloated egos and salaries.
I find it amusing that many people who fawn over Brando and Nicholson
also ridicule John Wayne and Clint Eastwood for not being actors, and
always playing themselves. Well, at least Wayne and Eastwood are honest
with themselves about their own level of ability, and go out of their
way to pick projects that they can succeed at. To me, Wayne and Eastwood
are at least as good actors as Brando and Nicholson (that is, they are not
capable of acting in any capacity), except they don't have the delusion
that they are **GREAT ARTISTS**.
As always, IMHO and YMMV. This is all a matter of taste anyway.

I've never really been a big Brando fan but that's really because I
know of no actor that really stands out from a crowd. They all seem
the same to me. I will admit that Nicholson gets on my nerves a bit
but that's because he always seems to use the same facial expression
(the sort that say "look at me, aren't I a naughty boy?") and plays the
same sort of parts.
I agree that walking out of "Apocalypse now" was a bad move, because in
this instance the end was quite important to the plot.

I believe that Brando was a good actor in days past...but those days
are long gone. When you hear about him having his lines fed to him
via hidden transmitter and you see his emotionless portrayals in
recent movies then you start to realize that producers are just
milking his past glory days.
re Superman, I think the beginning sets the story for Superman's
entire existance and missing it just leaves you wondering how
he came to be.
With any movie, the beginning and ending are parts of the movie.
To intentionally miss one or both makes the entire effort a waste.
Now, I also have to say that, yes, there are beginnings and endings
that are very poorly done, but they are still part of the entire effort
so judge the entire movie and not just the parts you like.
re Clint Eastwood and John Wayne
I like all their flicks too.

| Regarding Emma Thompson's past, I believe she came from the Oxford and
Cambridge Universities tradition of young comedians. She was one of
a group of friends/fellow students who I believe formed a troupe. They
were quite popular in the UK, so her move to the US and US-made/financed
films is quite recent. Stephen Fry & Hugh Laurie, however, weren't so
successful in trying to "cross the pond". The Monty Python bunch were
the last big group of Oxbridge students to really make it big in the US.
So, she has formal theater training as well as a comedic background,
but all from the UK.

With regard to Thompson's filmography (I find her nauseating to watch,
but that's not the point) I notice one of the films she was in was "my
father the hero", which brings me to my point.
When it was made, it was called "Mon pere ce heros" and was made in
France, it was since remade by Hollywood and called "my father the
hero" which is a literal translation so no problem there. My question
is, what idiot saw fit to rename this film "Daddy Cool" (presumably for
the American market) and why has he not been shot?

the Bounty "Well one really must serve in the military and the Army is a bit
dusty". One thing that makes that story great is that all three movie versions
tell the story with a different twist and each adds something to the legend.
Obviously in his later films he's coasting on his reputation.
