| I saw this preview twice; it's so obviously a take-off on Jagged Edge
that I'm wondering why it was made ... I like courtroom drama and
murder mysteries so I'll probably see it (not to mention how much I
like looking at Don Johnson!), but I think it's
Jagged-Edge-With-New-Actors no matter what the differences might be.
And I'm not a big fan of DeMorany ...

to see Don Johnson all dressed up looking smashing in those expensive suits.

This is a major surprise, considering Don Johnsons recent movies. It also stars
Rebecca DeMornay and Jack Warden. This is an excellent movie, lots of suspense,
plot twists and the best ending I've seen in a movie in a long time.
Johnson plays a self centered womanizer accused of murdering his rich wife
for her money and DeMornay plays the job centered, hot shot young attorney who
defends him. Don may actually get his movie career back, if he makes more movies
with Rebecca and fewer with his wife Melanie Griffith. This is as good a role,
for Johnson as, A Boy and His Dog.
A must see movie.

168.4 | What a disappointment! | 32198::KRUEGER | | Mon Jun 07 1993 12:18 | 32 |
| Wow, I can't believe -1 and I saw the same movie! I saw this Friday
night and couldn't believe how trashy this movie was. And I am a fan
of Johnson's (although I can take or leave DeMornay who peaked, I
think, doing "Risky Business"). This was the worst contrived and
poorly put-together piece of "law" crap I've ever seen! There is just
no way this movie even comes close to reality.
DeMornay was especially annoying with all those lingering profile
close-ups of her going into some kind of horror-trance; her emotional
state went from confident to scared to blubbery to stunned, and all her
facial expressions stayed the same! Johnson was so obnoxious a
character that to have him play some kind of well-paid gigolo was
ridiculous! Who would want such a whiny, conceited jerk? It made all
the women in this movie look like total idiots. Rich women don't need
such boring, uninteresting men to lay their money down on just because
they're not bad looking.
They also dragged in poor Jack whatsisname as DeMornay's old sidekick
(someone who's loved her like a daughter forever; blah) who played,
almost line by line, the same role as Glenn Close's old sidekick in
"Jagged Edge." What a ripoff.
I wouldn't even recommend this for video viewing. The end was the
worst; to suppose that it could actually end as favorably as it did for
DeMornay's character was totally preposterous! I wasn't the only one
who laughed at the last violent scene. The only redeeming line in the
movie was the last one DeMornay uttered in the last scene. But it
wasn't humorous enough to save the movie.
No stars out of any number of stars.

Interesting, such different opionions.
Did you see the original movie "Jagged Edge" and can you compare
it with him?
I saw "Jagged Edge" years ago and in my rememberance it was thrilling
and I liked it a lot. So it was intention to see this one too.

| The main difference with "Jagged Edge" and "Guilty as Sin" is the
villian. In "Guilty as Sin" the villian is a borded muderer who
goes out of his way to get caught so he can play cat and mouse with
the Lawyer he has becomed interested in. DeMornrey only beleives the
guy is inocent just long enough to take the case and she never likes
him. After she takes the case he goes out of his way to make her mad.
spoilers
The same plotting mind is revealed in both men but Johnson lets DeMorney
know he did it very early in the movie and she spends most of the movie
trying to find and leak evidence to prove him guilty. Johnson is also
more cold blooded in "Guilty as Sin". He kills and maims people with
little more emotion that a cat playing with a mouse. It amuses him
to play with his lawyer. He doesn't want her to like him. He has all
the women in the world fawning all over him. He wants a woman to hate
him but still do his bidding and be completely under his control.

You'd hardly recognize her.

| Actually, yes, she WAS good in "Trip to Bountiful." Okay, so she
peaked after that! ha ha
And Andrea, I liked Jagged Edge alot and found it to be a very
suspenseful thriller. This wannabe never even gets close.
Lorna, I wish you'd seen it ... since you're as bad a movie buff as I
am, I'd be interested in your viewpoint.

| Hi,
I saw this movie just Saturday night.. it got bad reviews in the paper,
but I liked it!.. I'm not a big Don Johnson fan either, but he was good
in this movie.. it had me sitting at the edge of my seat, and the
ending was really good!.

168.12 | Not all that bad, really. | 12035::MDNITE::RIVERS | AI worth shaving your head for | Mon Jun 28 1993 10:21 | 36 |
| I saw this over the weekend. Went to see "Last Action Hero", but the
projector bulb broke 20 minutes into the film, so I went next door.
(BTW, based on the twenty, dark minutes I saw of LAH, I don't think
it's going to be the hit vehicle Mr. S. would like it to be but that's
another review....)
I liked it. (having not seen "Jagged Edge", I can't compare and
contrast the two. Perhaps having not seen "Jagged Edge" allowed me to
like this movie more.)
Don Johnson indeed does look *quite* smashing through the movie, and
director Sidney Lumet sure does manage to get the best Don Johnson
performance I've seen (I'm not sure if that's a *great* compliment :).
He was cold, slimy, calculating and managed to make me want to see him
get his comeuppance, relatively rare for me as far as villians go. (I'm
the type who usually wants to see a really cool villian prevail).
Rebecca DeMornay is adequate as the hot-shot lawyer who likes the
challenge of getting tough cases off the hook, then finds out to be
careful what you wish for. She did spend a lot of time looking dazed,
but I probably would have, too.
The plot wasn't entirely predictable by me, which means it was lacking
in some "obvious" sex scenes and character interaction you come to
expect from this sort of premise, and that was nice. My biggest
complaints involve what I feel was not delving into the characters
quite *enough*, some generally silliness of action and dialog and an
ending that was appropriate, but somehow rushed and unfulfilling. Sort
of like the pork in Pork n Beans -- you find out it's pork, but hardly
pork in quality or quantity that you expected. :)
All in all, not a bad way to spend the afternoon.

168.13 | No need for the movie to turn stupid | TNPUBS::NAZZARO | GOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOAL!!!!!!!!! | Tue Mar 08 1994 09:26 | 28 |
| I watched this movie on tape last night (after my wife and I went out
to the movies to see "Tombstone" for $1.99 at the Lowell flick, but
they somehow broke the copy of the movie and had to give us passes).
The longer I watched this movie, the more I got annoyed, despite a
strong performance from Don Johnson, and a very believable one from
Rebecca DeMornay. Her transformation from highly successful amoral
sleazy lawyer to scared, trapped victim was right on target. However,
there were some aspects of the last half of this movie that really
ticked me off, and make me give it only a 4 out of 10. Annoyances
after the FF:
After the attack on her fiance, why didn't she confront Johnson's
character about it? The entire attack was kinda left twisting in the
wind.
How could she be so meticulous about buying gloves, mask, etc, to
incriminate him, and forget about the shoes? Ridiculous!
Why didn't Jack Warden take off when it was obvious Johnson was gonna
burn his place down, instead of running back into the fire so he could
get whacked on the head and killed? Sheesh - how stupid could he be?!?
And I'm sure DeMornay could pull him over the balcony like she did.
Yeah, right!!!

I agree with everything Nazz said! This movie looked like it had great
potential, so I was looking forward to seeing it. After watching it, I
was *very* disappointed. Don Johnson was the epitome of slime, but the
movie in general stunk. Not really a spoiler, but I'll put it after
the FF anyway:
The ending was so hokey! I just sat there saying, nah, this can't
be the ending...but it was...
