166.0. "Brother's Keeper" by DSSDEV::RUST () Wed Apr 28 1993 21:11

"Brother's Keeper" is a fine little documentary that I saw last year in
Boston. I don't want to try to recreate my review of it, but I did want
to mention that southern NH-area movie-goers can catch it at the Wilton
Town Hall theater if they hurry. (I believe it's available on video,
    too.)

In brief, it deals with three elderly, reclusive bachelor brothers who
run a farm in rural <somewhere or other>. One of the brothers is found
dead one morning, and the brother who shared his room is charged with
his murder. The neighbors promptly rise up in dismay and rally 'round
for the defense; the media get onto the scent; the trial begins, with a
plethora of colorful characters, from the delightfully obnoxious
medical examiner to the terminally shy third brother; and, as the film
progresses, the audience is caught up in the case, wondering along with
everyone else just what did happen - and whether justice (whatever it
    might be) will prevail.

In some places it's rather grim and disturbing, but overall it's a
    rather warm picture. Strongly recommended.

A disturbing documentary, which provoked a rather heated argument among
those of us who saw it about whether or not the brother was guilty.
Pretty amatuerish as far as filming goes and sometimes dull, but when
the trial begins you pay attention. As all the reviewers have said, the
filming makes you feel like you're on the jury.

In Munnsville, New York. Town of Stockbridge, Madison County. Actually
about 5 miles from where my parents live. I rented this this weekend
and have to make sure my parents get a chance to see it. Having lived
near and around that area up until I moved to New England 17 years ago,
I found it interesting to see the local sights I could identify, the
local TV news people, etc. I didn't recognize any of the local folks, but
I'd bet my Dad or Mom might.

And, yes, the medical examiner was an "interesting" character. I had to
wonder whether he's always like that or whether he acted that way only
because he knew they were filming a documentary. I found the NYSPD
personnel to be about as distasteful as I remember them having been when
I was a resident back there.

I saw this sometime ago on tape, and found it fairly engrossing simply
because of the brothers. What curious people they were. Besides that
it was a very well done documentary -- strange people here have said
they found it "disturbing". The only thing I found particularly icky
was the pig being slaughtered (I've never seen anything actually
getting shot before. I was left wondering what the point of shooting
the pig accomplished since it was still very much alive and kicking
when the guy cut it's throat, but I digress). Anyway, pig killing
aside, it's a very interesting movie.

    Cheers,

166.4Maybe pigs are hard?TLE::JBISHOPMon Mar 07 1994 15:399
The only time I was involved in processing a live pig, the farmer
failed to kill the pig despite two shots and used a knife at the
end. I thought it was his personal ineptitude, but maybe pigs are
hard to kill? After all, I'm talking "put the end of the rifle on
a stationary pig's head and pull trigger" here.

Remind me never to get reborn as a pig,
