This interesting film about rootlessness in the desert southwest, although slowly paced at times, is definitely worth seeing. The story begins with the revelation that Bridget Fonda's live-in boyfriend has decided that the two of them would suddenly just pick up and leave Arizona home for Butte, Montana. He had arrived in Arizona with is former lover, played by Phoebe Cates, who had decided to stay there after they broke up. None of these three people call this town their home, and the decision to just leave out of the blue is not any less bizarre than any of the other travels and shifts that undoubtedly characterized their lives up to this point. This rootlessness clashes with the house painter who arrives to fix up Fonda's place for the new tenants who will be coming in when she and her boyfriend move out. The painter is deeply rooted in the community; he had lived there all his life. He finds himself falling for her, but for her there is no possibility of permanently bonding with him. One of the more interesting scenes in this film involves the boyfriend's visit to his parents' house, and his reaction to what happens there. Overall, a fine film. Three stars out of four. -- Mike

I saw this over the weekend and loved it. It seemed like real life to me. I could really identify a lot with the characters, especially, but not limited to, Bridget Fonda's character. The acting is very good and there are quite a few really good lines. I thought it was a good slice of contemporary life movie. Lorna

BTW, the painter is played by Eric Stoltz (Mask, Waterdance, ...), who is currently Fonda's real life live-in boyfriend. I found it interesting Eric Stoltz was also the "Producer" ..... I liked this film, but not much more. I was probably disapointed because for some reason I expected more. Interesting to see Fonda in yet another movie where she has a scene in her underwear.

I didn't catch on to the use of this tool until 1/3 into the film, now I want to re-rent it and decipher the initial story, as told by the cacti. Also, a good Native American undercurrent wafting through this film, some ovious, some subtle -- all quite enchanting. my 2... Tony |
