This film stars Peter Gallagher (the lawyer in "Sex, Lies, and
Videotape"), as man who visits his estranged cousin in Chicago for the
summer in the hopes of building a reconciliation. Unfortunately, those
hopes run into a roadblock in the form of a mutual love interest. His
cousin lives with a group of friends who, for many years, have had an
ongoing history of playing practical jokes on one another--which
provides the name of this film. One thing all of the men in the story
are forced to confront is their own problems with love and commitment.
The film has some funny moments, but the previews tended to show most
of them and gave the impression that this is a comedy, whereas I viewed
this film as more of a drama. One example of an amusing line involves
Peter Gallagher's love interest asking him why men are such jerks. He
explains that he can't answer that because it is a closely guarded
secret, and he could get in a lot of trouble for giving it away.
This is a nice movie. I'd give it 3 stars out of 4.
