108.0. "My Cousin Vinny" by SSDEVO::WOESTEHOFF () Tue Mar 30 1993 16:07

Since one of the performers in this movie won an Academy Award, I thought
it would be a good idea to open a topic on it.

I saw this movie about a month or 2 ago. I was at our local video store
looking for a movie but couldn't find anything that I was interested in.
I finally grabbed this one off the shelf, as a last resort, only because the
description on the jacket cover sounded interesting. I have never been a
Joe Pesci fan and I didn't expect much of the movie. However, after
watching it, I was very pleasently surprised and enjoyed this low budget
film a lot. Of all the movies I've seen Pesci in, I'd have to say this was
his best. ? Tomei, who played his girlfriend was superb and won an Academy
award for her performance. I hope to see more of her in the future.

I thought it was a very enjoyable, quirky movie.

I liked all the one liners - and I just loved the way those to had
arguments - Are You Surrrrrre?????? Positive.....

I liked the scene in front of the cabin when she was upset about the
(good) possibilty he would lose the case and they wouldn't get married
then he goes off on a tangent about all the serious trouble he is in.

And that suit!!!! The one that looked like it came from a 60's wedding
    party. :^))))))

And I liked all the scenes of him on the bus heading for the jail.

The funniest part for me was when Tomie went off on a tangent about
    Pesci going hunting for deer.

    Funny stuff!

I thought Joe Pesci was excellent
    in Goodfellas and JFK.

I thought My Cousin Vinny was typical
of its genre and of most movies....
    made for teenage boys.....

Marissa Tomei (sp?) was cute in it,
but I found her Oscar a bit of a joke
    given the other fine performances.

My favorite line.....they pull up in the car to the curb and Pesci gets out
of the car dressed in black and wearing boots, definitely not in line with the
fashion of the town. Tomie states "OH yea....you blend"...

I have a question: is Marisa Tomei related to Concetta Tomei,
who played the head nurse on "China Beach"?

I loved it when Pesci was talking to one of the accused and the accused
thought he was asking him to be his cell-mate/boyfriend!

108.8Marisa Tomei pleasantly surprised meGOLF::HERMANWhat's so funny 'bout P,L&U?Wed Apr 07 1993 20:4341
I wasn't sure whether to put this reply here or in the Academy Award
topic, but chose this one. Feel free to move it beth if you think
    it is more applicable there.

I was astounded when Marisa Tomei won the Best Supporting Actress at
the Academy Awards, since the other 4 actresses are so excellent and
accomplished in their craft. However, as I hadn't yet seen My Cousin
Vinny, I figured I'd rent it to see if her performance was in the same
    league as the other women.

I had a preconception, based on previews and knowledge of the other 4
women, that her performance would be adequate for the movie and not
worthy of even consideration for a nomination, let alone winning the
    award.

    I was surprised.

I think Tomei's performance was the best thing about the movie. Joe
Pesci annoys me terribly, and I would *never* have watched this movie
if not for curiosity over Tomei. The script was a predictable
burlesque with broad jokes that were sometimes moderately funny but
not delivered particularly well by Pesci. A matter of taste no doubt.
Other noters undoubtedly find him hilarious.

Tomei was more natural, and created depth to her character with her
delivery. This depth then allowed Pesci's character to show a little
bit of development. She reminded me of Michelle Pfeiffer's role in
"Married to the Mob". Tomei's performance was much more than adequate.
She was funny without sounding like she was doing a stand-up routine.
She was the only character (other than Ralph Macchio's on occasion) who
I felt was a 'real' person. Even with the testimony scene.

After seeing the movie, I tend to support her being nominated, since a
nomination is for a single performance and doesn't require the actor or
actress to have done anything else in their career. However, I still
think any of the other 4 performances were more worthy of winning the
Oscar. But now I am less astounded, and merely disappointed.

    Cheers,
    George
108.9Gave her a second look!58323::DOONANFri Apr 16 1993 12:2213
I rented this movie for a second time last night, strictly because I
wanted to give Marisa Tomei a second chance. I tried to go in with an
open mind and a headset that said 'I'm watching an Oscar-winning
    performance'.

I still didn't see such a thing. True, she's the very best thing in a
mediocre movie, and she gives a solid performance. But an Oscar for
    that?

If Miss Tomei were smart, she'd never let that little guy out of her
sight, lest the folks at Price Waterhouse re-do their math, find a
    mistake, and come a-calling.
