48.0. ""The Dark Wind" (Hillerman book) ever made into movie?" by STAR::BECK (Paul Beck) Thu Feb 18 1993 18:27

There's a Tony Hillerman book from a couple of years ago called "The
Dark Wind", the cover of which advertises it soon to be a major motion
picture (are they ever minor?) starring Lou Diamond Phillips. My wife, a
Jim Chee (the hero of several Hillerman books) fan, tried to locate said
movie in a video rental place, and was unable to find it or any
    reference to it.

Does anybody know if said movie was ever made?

(The book takes place on the Navajo and Hopi reservations; Jim Chee is a
Navajo policeman, for those unfamiliar with Hillerman's books.)

According to a reader in the Native_Americans notesfile, note 43.86,
"Dark Wind" was released in Europe, but the Hopi got an injunction
against its release in the US.

You can read more about `Indian' movies in the N_A conference, topic 43.

That's a shame. I am a big Tony Hillerman fan, and I had also been
looking forward to seeing this movie.

The movie is in video stores now. I saw it a couple of months ago, but
don't remember a whole lot about it.
