38.0. "Strictly Ballroom" by 42712::DUTTONS () Mon Feb 15 1993 13:16

I don't think there was ever a topic for this in MOVIES.

A mainly unknown cast directed by (the Australian) Baz
Luhrmann, from a show he and others did at drama school.

It's the generic plain-jane-takes-off-her-glasses movie, with
a dance class setting, but the story is told with an odd
          combination of soap/soap parody, realism/surrealism - which
seems to have become a characteristic Antipodean style.

Somewhat uncentred, but the best film of 1992, no question.

Had to drag my son to this. He's at that age (13) where he's trying to
show his independence by rejecting his father's art-house taste in film.

He LOVED it. He says "Dad, I wanna buy this movie when it comes out".

He could tell at the beginning that the Ugly Duckling, Fran, would be
Scott's partner. That's the way of fairy tales and this is a good one,
    for kids of all ages.

This movie has certainly made waves in Australia. It is currently
being REdistributed to the theaters for another run.

I have seen it twice, and would enjoy it again. One of the aspects I
liked was the semi-docuementary style at the beginning.

A couple of notes on the film. It is based on a play, and Fran in the
play was played by Tara Morice, who had to lobby real hard to get cast as
Fran in the film. Also, the song "Love is in the Air", by John Paul Young,
revived Mr Young's career - he was a major icon on the Australian music
scene in the seventies, and is now a deejay in Newcastle (smallish town
    just north of Sydney).

    cheers

I saw this last week at "flicks" in Littleton (ick). I enjoyed
the movie too. I loved the dancing. Especially when Fran's
    father gets involved.

Thanks to the nod in another note I looked here.

Wish I had seen this on the big screen....I rented this Friday and
loved it! but......I had to force myself to sit through the first 15
minutes or so. At first I though I was watching a cheap John Waters
rip off but soon found it was nothing of the sort - kinda :^} I know
    vague huh?

    Wonderfull movie!

I liked the documentary stytle begining and more behind spoiler

I loved the plot twist, first the bad guy tells him his dad was a great
dancer but screwed it up then we find out the mother really didn't let
    the father dance.

I cringed the first time they showed Fran's family - I thought ugghh a
stereo typical barrio scene but was I ever pleasantly surprised when
the father and grandmother helped them dance!!! I also loved the
'translations' Fran was giving whne the grandmother was saying things
    like Beautiful body :^)

I loved it, I'm going to rent it again. Great campy comedy, wonderful
dancing, and Australian accents -- what more could one want?

I thought it was pretty funny. I enjoyed it the first time around, but
don't think I'd want to see it twice.

Well I watched the video on two continents...

First with my English mother in England who thoroughly enjoyed it...

Secondly with my American wife in the US who thoroughly enjoyed it...

I thoroughly enjoyed it both times...even though I'm not Australian...

But is this because I used to do ballroom dancing??

I rented this on this past weekend. At first we thought it was really
corney then we got into it and ended up liking it. Go figure.

I liked this one. Funny and some great commentary on the whole
ballroom dancing sort of thing (think Ice Skating and WWF and you've
got it. ;). Plus, great dancing! Wish I could do that.
