Chuck Norris can't act, but I love his movies.
"Code of Silence"
"Hero and the Terror"
"Breaker Breaker"
etc.

| You are among those who realize Martial Arts movies shouldn't be
watched for the acting. It always amuses me when I read about someone
trashing an M/A flick because such and such "can't act".

| HELLO .........
IS THIS NOTE STILL GOING.......
My names Martin i'm in DEC parc 1 in England.
I have been doing Martial Arts for 15 years since I was 5 years old, I
like to watch good movies but it's hard to find one these days which
is realistic. Because it was based on a true story I found Blood Sports
was very action packed, however Jean Claude Van Dame was not a good
choice for the part. He maybe a good Martial Artist but it was all
camera tricks and stills (major waste).
My hero without doubt is Bruce Lee, and I must agree with you he had
hardly any acting skills but was a brilliant Martial Artist.
So Ken if your still with us, what is your favorite all time Martial
Arts Movie ?

10.4 | Norris is tops | 29067::K_BOUCHARD | | Thu Apr 29 1993 18:06 | 7 |
| Yes,I'm one Ken who's still around! I guess my favorite M/A movie is
most any movie by Chuck Norris.
Incidentally,Van Damme is in a bit of hot water. Seems he has been
claiming to be a 1980 Kickboxing champion of some sort only nobody (but
him) can find any proof.

10.5 | The Shaolin Temple | SSDEVO::YIN | | Fri Oct 01 1993 20:49 | 20 |
| Has anyone heard of the 1982 "Shaolin Temple"? This was the first martial
arts film done with artists from the mainland. Since Communist China had no
(non-propaganda) film industry, the crew and director were (unfortunately)
from Hong Kong. Clips from this movie can be seen in "Iron and Silk"; you
can get some idea of how amazing the work is. Keep in mind that all sequences
were done with real weapons (read the "Iron and Silk" book -- it's a lot
better than the movie and offers interesting information about martial arts
in the mainland).
Good Points:
Beautiful gong fu (of course)
Excellent acting (and these guys aren't even actors!)
Wonderful story (charm, wit, and good old fashioned fun)
Bad Points:
the Hong Kong crew's "Saturday morning" directing (cheezy flash pans, etc)
some annoying trampoline work -- these guys DON'T need trampolines!
the girl cheats with a stunt double.
difficult to get -- my version doesn't even have subtitles!!
easily confused with half a zillion movies of the same name.

I've looked for but have never found the movie on LD or tape. I knew
that the old master in 'Silk & Iron' series starred in ST and I've
wanted to see it since. Perhaps I need to go down to Chinatown...

What's it about? Who's in it?

| I was stationed in Japan when "Shaolin Temple" first came out and was
able to see it in the theater, much to the chagrin of my ex-wife. It
was a fantastic movie and I thoroughly enjoyed it, but imagine my non-
impressed wife watching a Chinese movie with Japanese subtitles! I
haven't seen anything about it since.

10.9 | Don't miss these beauts! | SECOP1::CLARK | | Sat Oct 22 1994 20:22 | 19 |
| 1. Lady Kung-Fu. Heroine has a brother killed, goes after the bad-guys
who DO wear black. Invades the gang-leader's home and is pursued around
the house by approximately 50 bad guys. They don't have a chance. She
kills the gang leader by throwing two axes (with each hand no less)
into his back. As he turns and goes into his long death speech she
sticks two lit cigars into his eyes. And all the bad guys are lying in
piles and all dead.
2. The other I believe was entitled American Ninja. You can tell he's
the good guy because he is in a white ninja suit. Naturally all the bad
guys have a problem in seeing him in the green jungle area although I
could see him very clearly. Guess he knew the secret of Ninja
invisibility.
Both are so terrible they are unintentional comedy at it's best. I am
surprised both of these beauts haven't been on Mystery Science Theater
3000. Croooowww and Tom Servo are two of today's best movie critics.

10.10 | kung-fu flick fanatic | BAHTAT::BROWNED | | Wed Apr 26 1995 13:30 | 21 |
| I have just found this conference and i am a little dissapointed to
find allot of discussion has been about more of the commercially known
films and actors.
is there anyone outhere with an interest in the more classical kung-fu
martial arts movies. Such as early classic jackie chan movies:
>> Drunken Master
>> Snake in the eagles shadow
>> Fearless Hyena
These films are often disliked by there notoriously bad dubbing and
acting. However there fighting techniques such as Snake fist, various
drunken styles, heaven and earth etc are most entertaining.
Are there any fans outhere that love this sort of thing.
hope to here from you all

the acting).
Shootfighter
This stars Bolo Yeung surprisingly playing a good guy.
Nothing new here but plenty of well choreographed action.

| re .15
It sounds like the standard formula for the majority of all MA films
ever made (sweeping generalisations ? Me ?).
ie 1. Kid sees family/friends get killed by baddies
2. Kid gets trained up by oriental master.
3. Master dies/gets killed by baddies (optional)
4. Kid tracks down and beats up/kills baddies.
5. Final showdown with Chief Baddie
I love 'em all.

If one can get trained up, can one be trained down?
I have no idea which film you're talking about, but if it has a kid in
it, I'm not interested.

10.19 | Lee Chia Hui, a Chinese M/A expert | SHRMSG::KRISHNASWAMY | | Wed Jan 24 1996 12:34 | 7 |
| The mystery movie is "The temple of Shaolin" starring Lee Chia Hui,
which I saw in Hong Kong some years ago. One of the key scenes before
this "hero" enters the monastery is a lecture on the value of sacrifice
by one of his friends, who commits suicide for their "cause", whatever
it is. Against the evil ganglord, I guess and this kind of motivates
the hero to perform seemingly impossible tasks in the monastery during
his elaborate training.

10.20 | Jackie Chan | CHEFS::UKARCHIVING | | Fri Jan 26 1996 04:45 | 20 |
| Without doubt the finest martial arts films are those of Jackie
Chan. No Arguments (well except maybe for a couple of Bruce Lees).
I saw my first Jackie Chan film about 10 years ago, and have been shouting
ludicrous things with bad lip sync ever since. My personal favourites are '
The Young Master', 'Snake in the Eagles Shadow', 'Drunken Master' and 'The
Master With Cracked Fingers'.
His action films are also well worth watching for Jackie's incredible
lack of regard for human life, especially his own. In this category I
would definately recommend any of the Police Story films and Armour of
God.
My favourite film quote ever comes from a Jackie Chan film, during a
fight scene, and goes as follows (remember to overdub your voice badly
here)..."Your Kung Fu style is unique! In that it is the only kicking
style that has never been beaten!", now if that isn't fighting talk I
don't know what is.
dickie.
