2196.0. "Errors from old links" by 10245::COBROWN (Colin from Danmark) Tue Apr 29 1997 09:48

Cross post from DBI Note 1153 "Remote links get out of hand."
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Rdb 7.0-01, DBI 7.0, SQS 7.0 all on AXP under VMS 6.2.

Service defined in SQS with reuse TRANSACTION.
Service attaches to a DBI database with links to remote databases.

User attaches to DB via SQS and accesses a table on the remote database
    and all is fine.
User logs off. All is fine.

Except the service is still attached to the remote database.

More users and more access to remote databases and we now have lots of
    links open.

Is there anyway that the service can disconnect the remote attaches
when the user who was using them drops their connection to the service?
It would be a nice option at least.

The main problem is that if one of the network links dies, the server
will start returning errors to any client that is unfortunate enough to
be assigned to the server with the error. Worse still we have to
manually stop the server to solve the problem. Apart from the above
solution a nice temporary solution would be to enable the option that a
server commits suicide when such an error occurs.
