2168.0. "Cluster alias / load balancing via TCP/IP" by NOMAHS::PCSOMORI () Tue Mar 18 1997 03:21

    Hello,
    Our customer uses Rdb, via ODBC, TCP/IP, Sql/Services. Rdb is in
    a cluster environment (OpenVMS 6.2 VAX). The customer in the "Oracle
    ODBC Driver Setup for Rdb" ODBC administrator window enters the cluster
    alias in the "Server" name. She expects that load balancing will work,
    but it seems that server processes start at the same node again and
    again.
    Rdb and SQl/services version: 6.1

    How can he perform load balancing by SQL/Services?

    Thank you for your help,
    Pal

Hello,
	Sorry for my ignorance, but I thought a cluster alias was a DECnet
thing. Is the TCP/IP vendor DEC or another software provider?
Where is the name getting resolved? Is it local or are they using a Name
Resolver?
2168.2vendor is the DEC39946::PCSOMORITue Mar 18 1997 06:127

    The customer uses UCX, so the vendor is the DEC. They told me, they can
    use the cluster alias (address?). I don't know the name resolving, the
    customer is not reachable now.

    Thanx,

2168.3You can use Multinet...NOMAHS::SECRISTRdb WWS; [email protected]Tue Mar 18 1997 12:0014

    I have done this sort of thing with Multinet. They provide a function
    that lets you set up a "logical" IP that is a list of nodes in a
    cluster and then the DNS sends a connect to the least utilized node.
    We used it with SQL/Services and ODBC over TCP/IP with Wintel boxes
    using MS-Access (and it worked GREAT). No idea whether you can do
    this with UCX, though -- but it is strictly product dependent and is
    not a normal part of SQS, VMS, TCP/IP, etal. funcionality.

    Likewise realize that if the configuration of one of the lesser-used
    nodes is messed up this can be great fun to debug ;-)
