744.0. "How well can Trace/Expert run against a 7.2.X server ?" by NOMAHS::SECRIST (Rdb WWS; [email protected]) Tue May 06 1997 11:44

I have a customer who is trying to use Trace/Expert to tune an
application that will be stuck in 7.2 of the server for at
least a few more months. Is there someplace that documents
what functionality he won't have until he upgrades ? What if
he upgrades to a 7.3.X OIA on the host system (an Alpha running
    	Digital UNIX) ?

    	Regards,

To use OEM-based Expert and Trace from OEM 1.2.2 or 1.3.5 is
any version of the server 7.3.X equivalently functional as
long as your're using a minimum of OIA 7.3.2.1.3 and the
    	SQL*Net client 2.3.2.1.3 (i.e. 7.3.2 vs. 7.3.3) ?

There should be a compatibility matrix available on the home page that
discusses this in a lot of detail. For Expert, you can use any version
of the server from 7.1.6 and higher for either repository or target and
the software will handle any server differences. For Trace, there were
some restrictions, depending on whether you wanted to use the client or
not. I believe the client requires 7.3.3.

The OIA 7.3.3 says it does not support snmp. Is it a goal
for OEM to use snmp for everything in the future, including
querying the database, or will this just be intended to
    	provide compatability with snmp ?

Compatibility.

Is there a date to phase out NT 3.51 support for the OEM
    	products ?

Not sure that I've heard a final word in this area yet. There has
been some discussion on it. A lot will depend upon what the server
does in this area.
744.2What can we do for 7.2 ?NOMAHS::SECRISTRdb WWS; [email protected]Wed May 07 1997 13:1531

Thanks Todd ! I cross-posted your reply to 743 since you
addressed the questions there, although there is sort of a
lot of overlap with this one ;-)

This customer has a 7.3 client and is trying to work against
    	a 7.2 and 7.3 database on different systems. I know the 7.2
server won't be able to do any "database" stuff from Expert
because the server wasn't instrumented with Trace yet. He
wants to know exactly what "instance" work we can do, if any,
against the 7.2 server. The matrix doesn't list any notes
regarding Expert, so I wanted to check on any limitations.
Presumably if you're doing a standard SQL*Net connection to
pull stuff out of the V$ tables there would be no limitations
on "Instance" stuff. Presumably you can get "Schema" the
same way, although I was unsure if you figured out the magic
to make it do an RMU/EXTRACT/ITEMS=ALL yet (or if that was
even possible or a goal). I don't know how you would get any
"Environment" stuff easily through that mechanism (except
maybe TCL out of the agent or something), nor what the
state of the development progress is toward something along
the lines of the system sizer product on non-Compaq (Intel)
boxes (this customer is using an Alpha under Digital UNIX).
Likewise I'm not sure you can do anything on 7.2 without a
7.3.X OIA present anyway (and that you might have to manually
create and bring input files down to the client and include
them by hand or something if a current OIA is not available).

    	Thanks !

There are no limitations with Expert for database, instance, schema, or
workload collections for 7.1.6+ We use SQL*NET or Trace options, so if you are
in an environment where Trace is not supported, just use the SQL*NET
option. Expert's collection handles the differences in database
version, and the rules are sensitive to the version when we make
recommendations.

Sorry it's not more complicated... :)
