      Hi, I am new to this conference.  I have a question about sharing
    my home with birds.  I would like the opinions of some experienced
    people on this matter before I make the decision to bring any  birds
    home.
     I used to have parakeets and canaries when I was a child.  I have
    not had any birds in the ensuing decades because I have 10 cats and 
    a cool house. And being told you shouldn't have birds,cats, and
    a cool house together...that's kind of held me back.
     So, here's my housing conditions....can I have small birds and if so,
    what type would be recommended?  House is 10 rooms, 65 degrees in
    winter, forced hot air, no a/c in summer,  10 cats, 2 humans,
    there is room to excerise the birds away from cats.

    I share my house with about 40 birds and 2 cats at the moment.

    Your 65 deg temperature should not be a problem provided the change is
fairly gradual and you provide a nest box where the bird can go if it gets
cold ( its own body heat should warm up that small space.)

    One thing I notice is that my cats have very little interest in the large
birds (amazons, greys and cockatoos) however my cats look at the small birds
(lovebirds, cocketiels, conures etc.) as lunch.  We've had free flight
lovebirds out in our pool area (screened in.) The lovebirds landing on the
french doors on the outside would drive the cats crazy as they watched from the
inside.  We lost one lovebird to the cat over the past couple years (the bird
had escaped and could not fly.) Although I don't pay too much attention to the
cats and the large birds, I am not at all casual about the cats and the small
birds (I still have conures and a lonesome Sengal) 

    If you do get a small bird (which I do not advise you do,) I'd suggest you
NOT clip its wings so if it does inadvertently get out of its cage, it has more
chance than my bird did AND get a cage that is designed as much to keep the
cat OUT as it is to keep the bird IN.

    Well, we finally picked a bird.  An African Grey, who will be named
    Zulu after the once great African nation.  He is still being weaned, so
    we will be picking him up either this weekend or next.  He is one sharp
    bird, it has been neat watching him grow from a featherless pink blob
    to a bird who is quickly training to be a fine addition to our family.
    Everything is ready and waiting for him at home, we can't wait!
    I'm sure there will be more questions and bird stories very soon....
