898.0. "Molting Problem" by JVAX::SIPILA (Can I go home now?) Thu May 11 1995 08:49

My old Zebra Finch is going through a bad molt this season. Does
anyone have any suggestions of what I can do for him?

He is scratching a lot, and his feathers aren't smooth like they should
be. Otherwise he is the sassy little brat he's always been.

His favorite foods right now are veggies. Corn, peas and especially
zucchi. And he enjoys a drink of ginger-ale once in awhile. He eats a
real good seed diet by Kay-Tee.

Should I mix oil in his seeds for a few weeks?

    Any suggestions would be appreciated.

    Thanks,

       Susan Sipila

    Susan,

Try spraying him with a light mist of water from a spray bottle (be
sure it is one that has ONLY been used for water!). Also, there are
some commercial sprays that might help. Consider adding some vitimins
(like Petamine) to his food, and maybe adding some mushed up hard
boiled egg (shell and all) to his diet.

Also, if he seems to be scratching more than usually for when he molts,
he may have mites. Try one of the cage protectors for mites that you
can get a your local petshop.

898.2Max's MoltJVAX::SIPILACan I go home now?Wed May 24 1995 09:0219
Well, Max isn't scratching as much as his new feathers have started to
grow back. He looks real fluffly right now and his feathers look
    better in general.

I put a few drops of Cod Liver Oil in his staple seed mix, kept him
out of the sun, his tub is always full of water, and he gets more
veggies - he especially likes summer and zucchi squash and colliflower
    - cooked! And as a special treat he gets a little diet ginger-ale.

Spoiled bird? No way!!! He runs our household!

Thank you for answering my note both in the notesfiles and off-line.

    Regards,

          Susan

898.3Max Passed AwayJVAX::SIPILACan I go home now?Tue Jun 20 1995 08:5116
Max passed away June 14th. He had an apparent heart attack. He hd
been in failing health for a couple of weeks, but I thought he really
    was getting better.

We wish him terribly. There are so many things that he did for us that
we depended on. Like in the morning if it were getting near 7:00am he
would call to me from downstairs and that meant, "Hurry Up Mom, it's
    getting late."

He greeted me when I cam home, he ate meals with us. He brought us
great joy the five and a half years we had him. We became so attched
to him and him to us. We were his flock.

    Regards,

       Susan

    Susan,

I'm so sorry to read of Max's loss. It is very hard losing a pet,
but in time the sadness will pass and the wonderful memories of Max
    will shine.

    	 My condolences ...
