I just picked up my cockateil from my mother, who was watching him for a few days while I was out of town. Invariably, whenever he visits "Grandma," she buys him a new treat or toy (which I ceratainly don't want to discourage!) On this occasion, in addition to getting him a new bell, she wrapped his swing with sandpaper, which he seems to delight in tearing apart. Is this safe? Most of the pieces he tears off and just spits out, but he does seem to chew and eat a few. My mom's theory is that the sandpaper is good for keeping his bile filed down a little. Any insight would be appreciated! Thanks - Laura

Sandpaper perches covered perches are frowned upon by the informed bird keepers if they are they only perches in the cage as they can cause sores on the birds feet. This does not seem the case with your mothers cockateil. If these are commercial perch covers, one could "assume" that the manufacturer of the perch covers cares if your bird lives or dies and is using non-toxic Glue. If your mother is taking commercial sandpaper and glueing it to the swing, you should look into if the Glue and sandpaper she is using is suitable for human consumption. If it is no problem. Generally ,If it is safe for you to put in your mouth, IT is safe for the Bird, EXCEPT FOR CHOCOLATE, CAFFEINE, ALCOHOL, ADVOCADO, AND VERY FEW OTHER THINGS. My birds favorite Toys: Amazon : Untreated Pine wood, and knotted untreated leather Budgie : Balsa wood 1x4 from the Hobby shop Doug | |||||

Thanks Doug! Actually it wasn't glued to the swing at all. He generally prefers playing with his many bells, but the sandpaper seems to have been a welcome distraction for him. Laura |
