887.0. "Cockatiel info for potential new Owner" by AKOCOA::STRONG () Thu Dec 15 1994 15:00

Looking for Cockatiel info for a potential new owner.

After reading some of the notes...there seems to be
some benefits with purchasing a Bird that has been hand feed!

I live in Andover,Mass and would appreciate recommendations
of local Breeder's or Store and costs.

Also info on the amount of care required.....my 10 year old
son with the care provider and I want to make sure he
understands the amount of time/responsibility required

                                             Thanks,

                                                     Rick

I have 2 cockatiels and they are a delight! Daily care includes
feeding, changing water, cleaning cage and play. Weekly care includes
stripping down the cage and cleaning it with a bird-safe disinfectant
(such as the over the counter cage cleaners). You will also want
to line up an avian vet in your area (if there is one close by). You
might want to check with Littleton Animal Hospital/Dr. Kilgore -- they
may know of one closer to you. Otherwise, I highly recommend Kilgore
and her associate Sager. Very, very good, and the birds LOVE them.

As far as good pet stores, I was at Wind Song in Merrimack, NH a year
or two ago, and their cockatiels were eating pasta with only a little
seed -- it seemed like an excellent way to buy a bird already started
on a good diet. Also, the birds on display were in immaculate cages.

I'd concern myself more with the conditions the bird came from than the
price. I well-fed, well-kept bird will cost less in the long run in
terms of vet bills and heartache. Plus you will be doing business with
those who deserve to be in business, not those who are trying to make a
quick buck at the bird's expense.

    Hi Rick,

It appears you work in Acton and not too far from the one store I would
reccomend. Fish and Chirps on Main Street Ayer.

If you buy ONE your son should plan on spending at least 2 hours a day
with him. If you buy 2 , 1 hour could be alright.
