886.0. "Sun Conure chews Senegals feathers off!! 8-[" by WAYOUT::LOAT (Thats a nice bit of rope!) Fri Dec 02 1994 06:37
Having had CVhewy, the loudest Sun Conure in the world for a while, I
got another bird, Churchill, the shy retiring Senagal to keep her
conpany, and hopefully to keep her occupied, and slightly quieter!
Chewy is hand reared, and craves attention at all time. She'll scream
at the top of her (loud) voice when we're around if she's not with us.
Churchill is a parent reared bird, who is very nervous around people.
When we got him (bought from a couple who had just started their own
business and didn't have time to spend with him anymore) he would sit
at the top of his cage, still as a statue, and not make any noise at
all. Now, he knows us, and will wander round his cage eating etc when
we're in the room. He will stand on your hand (if he's got no other
choice!) but he's always looking for a way to get back to his cage, so
I think we've still got a lot of work with him.
The two birds always used to keep away from each other when they were
out of their cages (supervised of course) but the other day, they
suddenly moved towards each other, cuddled up, and started preening
each other!
We thought everything was going okay, but noticed that Chewy was
definitely the boss bird.
Yesterday, the second day they'd been allowed to be together, we
noticed that Chewy has been chewing, and biting off the feathers on
Churchills head, so he's now got a little bald spot!
We seperated the birds immediately, and they are now back to seperate
living quarters! We want them to live in the same cage eventually, and
keep eacj other company during the day, when we're out at work, but it
looks like this won't happen now!
Has anyone else had any experience with one bird chewing the feathers
of another bird? She hasn't plucked them, she's actually chewed them
off, so there are just little stumps left. 8-[
Chewy has perfect feathers, and has never shown any tendancy to chew
her own feathers.
What can we do? Could this be a consequence of Chewy being hand-reared,
and not having proper bird-sense, which she may have learned from her
brothers/sisters/parents?
Any ideas?
Thanx
Steve.

| one possiblilty is that Chewy is mounting Churchill, but that is more
likely to result in pulling them out.
Maybe if you use Bitters on churchills head that would stop him.
Bitters are sold in most pet stores to stop birds from chewing there
own feathers.
