822.0. "Nn-, or Hawaan goose." by UTROP1::BOSMAN_P () Mon Aug 30 1993 03:59

To my rather big surprise I could lay my hands on an unrelated pair
of yearling Nn- or Hawaan geese of outstanding quality. They are
    incredibly sweet and beautifull!
This afternoon I will go and collect them. Since they have such a
sweet disposition we expect no problems with our Australian Mane-geese
    and Red-shouldered teales.

In our, Dutch, climate the Nn does not need any special requirements
or shelter. Our fenced garden with lots of shrubbery and shading trees
surrounding grassy patches and a small pond is idealy suited to them.
They eat the same food as the other fowl so that's good as well.
The only potential risc is their breeding in januari/februari. This
means we might need to hatch the eggs in the incubator. We'll see
wether winter '95 is as soft as usual or too cold.

Does any of you have additional info of, or sources for this, about the
Nn? After all, this goose is Hawaan, thus more or less an indiginous
    USA species!

The Nn may be rare but it has a lot of interest. I have encountered
little difficulty in finding quite a bit of info. The Slimbridge
Centre, where most released Nn have been bred, was very forthcoming
    with reports, leaflets etc.
    Also found three books sofar:
    - The Nn and the Menehue (Hawaiian folkloristic fairy tale)
    - The Nn (childrens' education book)
    - The Nn, an experiment in conservation (scientific study on the
    Nn)

The geese themselves are doing great too and they seem to have realy
taken to our home. Although too young to realy breed, they are displaying
    the lot. Very interesting!
