Hi, It could be that this question has been asked (and answered) before, but because I am rather new to 'NOTES' and do not have the time to scan all the 'old' notes, I will ask it again: Can somebody tell me what the maximum age is that a parrakeet can reach??? My parents own a parrakeet which lives with the family for 14 years now, altough the man how sold the parrakeet told my father that it would not get older than aprx 10 years. Is this parrakeet a 'record' bird or???? regards, Caren

Hi Carin, Before I knew anything about birds, My family had a parakeet live to over 10 on H**tz mountain seeds ! With that there is no limit as to how long a budgie could live on a good diet! In all seriousness, 14 is what I have always heard for an average maximum. of course there always exceptions. Most of my budgies have died between 3 and 5 years. 3 to 5 is a critical age for developing tumors and 2 of the 3 of mine that died at young ages definitely had tumors, 1 in the abdomon and 1 on the wing. What is the max age for Human Beings ? Maybe we could use this note to record the Max age for all our pet birds. Doug

I believe that a budgie, under optimal conditions, can live to 30 years, but this is really unusually. 14-15 is a more typical old age. /Rita

Some other maximum ages I've heard: Amazons and cockatoos can live to be over 100. I've met an 80+ amazon, and Bird Talk recently had an article about an amazon they estimated to be 103. Cockatiels have a maximum lifespan similar to budgies, but are les likely to die young from tumours, and are a little more likely to live into their 20s. Finches can live 5 to 10 years, depending on species. African grey can live to be 70-80. Anyone know about senegals, macaws, pionus? All of these maximum ages can only be achieved with really healthy birds under optimum care. Most birds die before they reach the age of 10. With more bird owners understanding proper nutrition and environment, and more domestically raised birds (imports are more likely to carry disease, to be stressed, injured, etc in shipping) I think we will see more birds living longer lives (I hope!).
