In the March issue of Bird Talk, in the Show Notes column there is a
photo and a short paragraph on the lineolated parakeet. I think the
bird is adorable and would like to know more about them. Any one
have any info?
Do they make good pets?
Do they talk?
What do they sound like? ('tiel, budgie, conure)
Cost?
Are there any breeders in New England?
Are they easy to breed?
Where might I be able to get more info or see one in person?
Thanks for any input!

I'll check in my parrot book tonight...I'm not familiar with that
kind. But I don't think I've seen any advertised in the Bird Talk
classifieds so I would take that as an indicator.
I'll enter whatever I find.

Maryanne,
It's funny you ask. I had a chance to pick some of those up from a
friend who was having some shipped in from a breeder in Calif. I was
supposedly getting a good deal at around $75. ea. I didn't get them,
however I can get you some info on them and get back to you. I'll try
to reach him tonite. They are very cute.

| 768.3 | This is what the book says | ALFA1::COOK | Chips R Us | Fri Feb 05 1993 15:25 | 29 |
The book I have is "Parrots" by David Alderton.
It says:
Lineolated Parakeet (Bolborhynchus lineola)
Distribution:
Central and South America,a ranging from Mexico to Panama and from
wextern Venezuela to central Peru.
Size: 16cm (6 in.)
Sexing:
The barring on the rump and tail feathers is more prominent on cocks
than on hens. These markings have given rise to the species' other
name of Barred Parakeet.
Youngsters:
The bluish tinge on theri heads is usually more pronounced than on
adults.
This species is probably the most commonly available member of its
genus in the UK at present. Its habits do not differ markedly from
those of related parakeets. Breeding on the colony system is quite
feasible; indeed, you are likely to achieve better results if you can
keep these birds in a group, rather than as individual pairs.
Incubation lasts about 18 days and the chicks fledge at about five
weeks old. The average clutch size varies from three to six eggs.
Quiet, attractive and free-breeding when kept in small groups, these
birds are also less destructive than most species.
