737.0. "incubation period?" by GERBIL::MAGEE () Mon Oct 05 1992 16:55

My button quail are now laying eggs every other
day! Does anyone have any reference material to
tell what the incubation period is?

Also the birds do not want to sit on the eggs.
As a matter of fact after a day or so of sitting
the birds eat the eggs. Any ideas? I checked egg
turners and incubaters but much too much money
    for me!

    Chet,

I have never Bred birds, but from what I remember hearing this would be
common whenever the birds don't have enough privacy. They may fear that
the eggs will be harmed and afraid another animal will eat them, so
they eat them first. If I remember right your aviary is quite busy.
Maybe if you added a potted plant(small tree) it would give them some
    cover.

    Good luck,
    Doug

    doug,
That's not it. As soon as the eggs appeared I
put them in a seperate cage. When the first egg was
eaten I took the male out thinking that was the problem.
Then she ate another one when she was alone!

Sorry to but in on your topic but I have a pair of Lovebirds that have
now laid eggs for the second time. My problem is that the hen sits on them
all day and all night and not a lot has happend. I am not really expecting
them to hatch but I am worried about her.

How long should she be allowed to sit on them ?.
They are in a normal cage supplied for Lovebirds,

The eggs appear to be developing, they have red blood cells and a embryo (?)
forming. I still let them out for exercise and after two minutes shes back
 in the cage.

Anybody able to offer me any advice ?.

  Thanks
