735.0. "A Beepless Finch?\" by GERBIL::MAGEE () Thu Sep 24 1992 10:58

I want to add a pair of finches to my mixed aviary
but I have one large problem---
                                    my wife ;-)

you see she hates the beeping noise they make!

So the question is- Do all types of finches beep???

I have only had experience in the past w/ zebra
finches and am ignorant beyond that.

Any info or advice is appreciated.

Well, I certainly do not consider myself any kind of expert BUT
I do have several different kinds of finches and all finches are
NOT as loud as the zebras (thank goodness!).

Society finches (males) sing like a cross between a canary and a
house wren. I can sleep right through that! Orange cheeked waxbills
sound like squeaky toys (and you should hear them if one decides to
scold one of the others...you would fall down laughing). I have a
female African silverbill...she just sort of "chips". But she's real
cute. My female owl makes a soft owl-sounding "whhooo" and also has
    a very cute little song.

But what else do you have in your aviary? Don't you have larger birds?
I don't think you really want to add finches to a group of "big birds"
judging from what I've read in here and other places.

HOWEVER, I have some baby society finches who need to go!

    Gwen,
In my aviary I have a very gentle old
male keet, two very passive button quial and
two tiels,(male & female). All get along quite
well now. Note- I took out the problem children
    aka the murderous Love Birds!

My thought is that they all tend to have
thier favorite areas and the finches would probably
have perches set up in a way that would make it
uncomfortable for the tiels to hang out on.

Re: available finches- how available- how much
and how do I sell my wife on them ;-)

Well, I have three from the same clutch...about 2 months old. One
male, fawn and white and just learning to sing. Two females, chocolate
and white. Female society finches do make sound but it's just cheeps
    and peeps.

I guess if you have enough space it could possibly work -- as long as
you're a good bird catcher and could get the finches out if the big
    birds go after them.

I'd be happy to sell them to you for $5 each...

There are several types of finches that have *lovely* voices...
try strawberry finches or red-eared waxbills, along with green singing
finches (or any serin). Given your current inhabitants, other
possibilities that might work include Pekin robins, a male canary, or
miniature doves (which make a lovely coo).

    Thanks for the input!

Problem as I see it with the birds offered for sale
is that I would like to breed them. Brother & sister
birds aren't good for this I assume? Also I am impatient
and I'm sure that I would have to wait for them to
    "grow up"!

I hope to go to the NHAS auction tonight- you never know ;-)
