709.0. "Potty Training HELP!" by GRANPA::KSWARTZ () Fri Jul 17 1992 11:23

Bogart is a 1 year old african grey. We have had him for about 8 months
now and of course he's spoiled rotten. From the beginning we have
been trying to "potty" train him to go on his cage. Well he did great
he picked it up real quick. We would have him on us and about every
20 - 30 minutes put him on his cage and say "go potty" and he would.
Well now that he has gotten older and smarter he climbs down his cage
(when we are home his cage is open and he can go in & out as he
pleases) and walks around and will "potty" any where he pleases. I try
and catch him and say "no!" and put him back on his cage and tell him
"You go potty here!" but it doesnt seem to be working. Does it take
months & months for them to learn or is this an effort in futility?
He still understands "go potty" and will go when we put him on the
perch and he doesnt "go" on us either its that he doesnt understand
the difference between the carpet and his cage. Any suggestions out
there? I really don't want to lock him in his cage because when we are
home its his only recreation time out, since he's in his cage all day
    long.

    thanks for the help!

Most of the larger parots do not like to "go" in their cage. All
my parots will "go" as soon as they get out of the cage. My Grey
will hold it until he gets out (I put papers on the floor). Even
the conure doesn't want to "go" inside. The Tiels go everywhere
and anywhere. I believe it is natural for them to Not go in their
    	home.

Our vet had several birds which were paper trained. The paper was
near the cage. You 'll probably have better luck with that.

The fist thing our Gray does when she gets out of her cage is "go"
    off the side!

    Good luck!

My wife was successful in potty training our yellow nape (which was a pet
store purchase). First we bought a skirt that fit around the base of the
cage that catches most of the seeds and the bird droppings. Then my wife
would catch our bird getting ready to drop one (our nape would flutter its
tail prior to going). My wife or I would then pick her up take her to the
cage and say " I poo pooed " . After about a week our bird got the idea and
now waits till she gets on her cage and poops over the edge onto the
skirt(which has a paper lining) and says " I poo pooed ", I'm a good boy" .

We make it a point not to keep him/her away from the cage over twenty minutes
since we heard thats the average cycle time for the nape.
