I've just purchased a mini-macaw. She's ADORABLE.! But I already knew this, since I am friends with her previous owner who purchased her as a hand-fed baby. She's 3 1/2 years old, has about a 75 word vocabulary and is "potty-trained". Her name is Terry-Jo. My friend has Several larger birds that are taking up her time and felt Terry-Jo should be some place where she's the Queen instead of having to share too much of the attention. Although I do have 2 cockatiels, and a Nanday Conure that she has to share me with, so far she doesn't seem to mind. Just wanted to boast a bit about my new "daughter"... Thanks for listening! kathleen

Congrats Kathleen! >> Just wanted to ask what a "mini" macaw is? Besides your well known Blue and Golds, Red and Greens, Scarlets, etc, there are a few small species of macaw. Lessee... there's the Severe, the Yellow-Collared, the Hahn's, and a couple others. They are all basically just green and not as colorful as the bigger macaws. The Hahn's is the smallest and it's almost as small as a cockatiel. A shop near me has some Severes that talk and play together. They are really cute! Roseanne | |||||

Macaws are identified by the bare patch of facial skin. Some of the macaws have lines of small feathers on parts of this area (Blue and Golds, Greenwings) and some do not do not (Scarlets). Most of the larger Macaws belong to the genus ARA, but a few like the Hyacynth and some of the now extinct, or almost extinct belong to a smaller genus, which I can not remember at the moment. -dick |
