A friend of mine recently rescued two zebra finches (Fred and Wilma
Finchstone :-) ) from the shelter where we volunteer. They had babies,
and I am considering taking two of them off her hands.
The question I have is, do you have to keep finches as mating pairs?
I'd prefer to take two males (she has 3 male babies and one female
baby), because I really don't want babies. The book I read about them
doesn't really say, it does say you have to have a pair, and implies
throughout they should be male and female.
So, will two males work? Or will they fight?
Or, if I get a mating pair, and always take the eggs away, will they
turn into psyco birds? (They would be brother and sister, so I
definitely wouldn't want them to mate.)
Also, one of the males is white. Do the white finches have any
personality disorders that would make a male-male pair not work? (The
book I have also mentioned that the white ones can have other recessive
genes that can make them a little weird.)
Any advice would be appreciated...

Taking two of the males should work just fine! Finches are society
birds, they do not like being alone. Take the two, give them plenty of
room, and watch them chatter and play. Let us know how it goes!

Hi -
My two are brother and sister and totally devoted to each other!
I do not let them raise young just because they are brother and sister.
Maggie doesn't lay eggs anymore but when she did I would take them out
of the bed and praise her - then dispose of the egg(s) when she wasn't
around to see it. She excepted this and did not put up a fuss. Once in
awhile I would find an egg that had been pecked at.
I think she enjoy the praise she got when I found an egg! Yup, my
birds are spoiled!
You'll really enjoy them. They love attention, sing like crazy, and
play silly little birdy games as well as play with their toys. Their
toys are things like the plastic ring off a half gallon milk jug, tiny
squares of plastic canvas, yarn or string or anything else that might
strike their fancy.
A breeder told me that 2 males will get along but not 2 males and
2 females or 2 males and 2 females, but 3 males and 3 females will get
along. I don't quite understand it because when you go to the pet
store there are so many of them in one cage!
I don't know anything about the lighter colored Zebra Finches - white
or fawn.
Take a male and female. Give them a lot of love and attention and they
will provide you with a lot of enjoyment. They are so cute!
