699.0. "A parakeet flew into my life!" by SALEM::BARTON (Jack Barton) Mon Jun 15 1992 22:23

I was driving down the road on Friday about 12:00PM and I waw this bright
colored bird landing on a sidewalk. I took a closer look and it was a little
Keet. I stopped and watched it, then I started following it with my car. I got
out of my car and was able to catch it by dropping my coat over it. It would
let me get next to it but It took a little while. I was fortunate we were
within an eighth of a mile from my house so I got him home and I put him in a
large cardboard box with some water and some shelled unsalted sunflower seeds.
The poor thing squarked up a storm. I called my girlfriend at her work(she has
2 Parakeets) and told her the story of what just transpired. She had an extra
cage and all the trimmings. I had to go to work, and when she got out, she was
going to take care of the little guy. I called her during my lunch break and
she told me when she opened the box it took off flying all over my house then
found a perch on my overhead fan. Then It took off while I was talking to her
and she couldn't find it. It ended up perching on the antena to the cordless
phone that she was using. They both startled each other then it took off again,
then she put some seed in her palm and the bird jump right on it chowing up a
storm. She just walked over to the cage and put it in but it didn't want to
get off her hand as long as there was any seed there.
Well its been getting used to its new cage. Today it discovered the mirror.
It's just a baby. My girlfriend thinks that it has just been weened.
I put a found add in the paper but I am now hoping that nobody calls. I have
been reading up on Keets and Tiels I wanted to get one in the near future
anyway.
It isn't interested in anything but seed so far but it has been drinking
vitamin water but very little. I tried celery greens and fresh brocoli but it
wants no part of them yet. I just want him to get adjusted first to his new
surroundings before I try any different food. What do you all think? It cherps
very little so far and gets real scared when I put my hand in the cage to
change the food and water. I guess I'll just take my time. Any advice to win
him over would be greatly appreciated.
I'll let you know how we make out.

    Jack,
The best way to tame it-
                                  Patience
                                           Patience
                                                    Patience

You may try feeding it seed from a spoon.
Gradually over time bring your hand further
up the spoon handle until it gets comfortable
with your hand. Also when it gets more used to
you put a pencil up against its belly at the top
of its' legs. The bird will learn how to perch on
the pencil. Eventually substitute your finger.

It's a lot of work but it's worth it!

    Providential Blessings- Chet

I think I would clip it's wings. Then, when you're going to be sitting
in the room, leave the cage door open so it can crawl around the
outside of the cage if it wants to. THis should help it get used to
the idea that the new surrounding are safe.

699.3I DON'T BELIEVE IT!SELL3::MCETTRICKThu Jun 18 1992 12:3416
I can't believe this. In note 694.0 you "decided" you want a bird and
here it is only note 699.0 and one "flys into you life"! Have you
tried "deciding" to win the Megabucks? You never know...

When I had parakeets when I was a teen, I remember talking to them at
first then putting my hand in the cage and talking still more
(something I do well) then finally attempting to have it perch my
finger. It didn't take that long on two birds that I had but one bird
was extremely mean and never tamed.

    Good luck.

Oh, and while you're at it, can you decide that I should win the
    Megabucks too?

699.4I forgot somethingSELL3::MCETTRICKThu Jun 18 1992 12:556
I forgot to tell you, Note #24 is someone giving advice regarding a
"scared parakeet". In the end they find out the bird is a cockateil,
but the info is still good.

699.5Lucky is his name!!SALEM::BARTONJack BartonThu Jun 18 1992 22:0413
HMMMM Megabucks, Think I'll give it a try!

Well I got four calls for the bird but nobody was able to describe it
from the add I put in the lost and found section in the newspaper. You
see it has a band on one of its legs and nobody mentioned it. So now I
figure it is mine. He is coming around but he has yet to perch on my
finger yet, but I know the little guy has potential. It is pretty
    comfortable with his new suroundings.
I want to have the band removed and have its wings clipped. I think I
will have a Vet do it and give him a physical at the same time. Does
anyone know of an avion vet in the Lynn Ma area?
