670.0. "moth holes in feathers?" by GENT::TINA () Mon Mar 09 1992 08:03
i searched all notes regarding feathers, but i did not find this topic.
if you look up close to chewy's feathers, it looks like there are moth
holes in them. kind of like synged hair, the feather is broked down
and weak.
he has had this since we have had him. at first i thought it was just
his baby feathers. we have had him at the vet, and she has never said
anything. i have my two cockatiel's cage right near chewy's. their
feathers don't look like that. my girlfriend's birds don't either.
it just doesn't look normal.
does anyone have info if this is a problem? t

This problem is often caused by feather mite - the mite are tiny
and almost invisble to the nacket eye. The problem is caused as the
feathers start to grow and are damaged by the mite when they are
still emerging from the feather sheath. The best treatment is at
least (2) dustings or sprays of mite powder at (5) day intervals
as the powder does not kill the eggs of the mite. The feathers
however will not improve until they moult and grow in again.
