649.0. "too loud for the neighboors" by 24667::SARACO () Fri Jan 10 1992 15:02

    Hello,

My cockatoo and I are about to move out of a single family home and
back into an apartment building. Lots of letters were written to the
management of the last complex we lived in complaining about the noise.

I'm looking for ways to control the noise. Has anyone developed a type
of sound proofing for a bird cage?

I've tried cork board. It didn't suppress the noise, she did enjoy
    it as a snack though.

    I'd appreciate any suggestions.

    Thanks,

    Linda

I don't know if anybody else has tried this, but this is my plan (when I
get rich...and can afford to remodel my house).

I'm going to build her a cage into a wall (partly into a room) which is about
4x6x8high. The width will be 6 feet (4 feet deep). I'm thinking of corian or
something indestructible for the insides of the walls. The outside wall will
be a grate (similar to a cage door) which I'm planning on having stainless or
something relatively long lasting. I'd like to have the base a custom shower
base with a grate about 8 inches above it, again stainless. There will be
ceiling grate above which will be some ventilation of some kind (to be worked
out). The bottom will have a drain to the sewer system. I'm thinking of
basically having it a "shower stall" complete with running water. There will
be a manzanita tree of some kind in it. The whole cage will be inset about
6 inches into this special room, with a plexi door which can be shut when
she goes into one of her moods. If I have the ventilation right, she gets
heat and return air as well.

Anybody have any suggestions?

A corner room, with two outside walls if you
are lucky enough to have such a location. In
lieu of that, any outside wall is better than
	none....

Try carpets on the walls...and lots of toys...

hmmm ...	?? How to keep _one_ bird quiet (relatively) ???

Ms.TECO and Farli FireLizard entertain each other and carry
on their own vocabulary-building exercises ... And one of their
    favorites is "Jungle Noises" ...

Our "keep 'em quiet" tactic is to leave a radio on with music
all day while there are no people around. The hope is that they
will be somewhat soothed by having audio entertainment. And when
that fails the music somewhat acts to make it less obvious to the
human listeners that there are birds making noise in there.

Most likely the neighbors think somebody is being tortured by
being forced to listen to hours of old-time Rock 'n' Roll ...

But - how to soundproof ? Pick a corner and then create a "tent"
around the bird's cage with sound-deadening material ... which will
also prevent drafts and one can almost imagine drawing aside the
drapery at the entrance forming an attractive "frame" for the bird.
With lots of chunks of foam material on the floor this would keep
noise from traveling to those down-stairs ... One may imagine the
cage is suspended as noise might travel down rigid cage support legs.

~-sdt-~ we only imagine ... no actual testing was ever successful ...
... and neither of them has learned to "sing" yet either ...
