645.0. "Forlorn Grey feels abandoned. What to do?" by AIMTEC::SIMPSON_L () Mon Jan 06 1992 14:08
Hi!
I have a Congo Grey (Kudzu). A friend
has Kudzu's brother, (Crabgrass).
My friend is having her house painted
so she brought Crabgrass and her cockatiel, (Dusty) over
to our house for a while. She tried bording them at a pet shop
but they both got so stressed I said that I would care for them.
However, the painting is taking a lot longer
than we anticipated.
I have some questions.
1. Is the smell of any paint harmful to birds?
Part of the house is being painted with oil-based paint which
we realize is quite harmful. But we get conflicting info on Latex
paint.
Some people say that any paint smell is bad for them and she should not
bring them back until all traces of smell are gone. Others say
that the Latex should not harm them. This leads to my next question.
2. Crabgrass is taking the separation from her quite hard. When
I used to go visit her before all this, he would let me pet him and
feed him.
Until last night, I had to leave him in the cage and just fill his food
and
water dishes. He would snap at me if I tried to touch him.
Last night, however, he seemed to decide that he just could not
stand it any longer and was desperate for company.
He came rushing out of his cage to me and just wanted to be cuddled.
My friend comes to visit him some so he won't forget her.
Should I try to continue to handle him so he won't feel lonely?
Will I be straining the bond between him and my friend?
How can I make him as happy as posible?
He may be with me for a while the way things are going.
Thanks very much.
Laurie

| Hi,
I have read that the paint smell makes the Birds nose run then they are
more prone to infection. I do not know that this is fact but I do
know that birds are alot more sensitive than people. I would
keep the birds out of the painted area for about 2 days more if the
smell is real strong.
