Well, the bird "bug" hit me again over last weekend. I went out and bought another bird. Mario, is a lovely green and yellow canary. I brought him home late Sunday and he was already singing on Monday. He seems very happy and seems to accept all the other birds. I never realized how wonderfully canaries sang. I'm really impressed with this little bird. He eats up a storm, seeds, greens, rice, etc.. and loves to bathe and sun himself. Mario's an American singer and he is mostly green. He does have deep yellow on his tummy and base of his wings. Also has a white/yellow tail. Does this make him a verigated canary? Mario is also soooo clean. I suppose I expected him to be like the zebra finches who are soooo dirty. This was a pleasant surprise! Mario is also quite tame. He got out of his cage while my husband was changing one of his perches and John simply went over to Mario, put his hand out against his chest and Mario just got on. John was able to sneak in a kiss before Mario flew off again. When John was done with the cage, he simply walked over, picked Mario up and put him back into his cage. Needless to say, Mario has earned free flying time in the bird room at least a few times per week. Mario really is a love. Any suggestions on canary care would be welcomed. thanks Jeanne

633.1 | Health Guaranty on Canary? | MYGUY::LANDINGHAM | Mrs. Kip | Mon Dec 16 1991 12:24 | 26 |
I bought my sister's Christmas present this past Saturday, since the weather was so warm. I brought home a green factor male canary, which the store said was already singing. I haven't heard him sing yet, but from the time I was at the house (my sister got her present early!), he has quite the personality! He was right at home in his cage in no time, eating the "stress diet" I bought him, and munching on the honey stick, hopping up and down and around on the cage, and occasionally chirping. He's very personable! The pet shop said we have three business days to have his health checked by an avian vet. If anything is wrong they'd refund the money but... the weather is not going to cooperate (it's very COLD and snowing); and, my sister is ill and cannot get around on her own. My question is this: do most of you have your birds checked out by an avian when you buy them? Is a 3 day health guarantee normal for canaries? I hope this little bugger lives alot longer than 3 days; they're not cheap! But, for the cost of the bird and the expression on my sister's face, I couldn't ask for anything more. Thanks for any advice. Rgds, marcia | |||||

I got my canary from a private breeder. He did not suggest a health check. My canary stopped singing, after it's first molt. And has not picked back up to the extent he sang before. I called the breeder and he said they don't sing as much in winter do to the shortened days, but should pick back up during the breeding season. If I put sprouted seed greens in the cage he sings. When I first brought him home it took him a week before he started singing. Mostly just peeped. After parakeets, and cockatiels I find my canary much more to my liking. |
