626.0. "Pellet Talk" by SALSA::DEFRANCO () Thu Nov 14 1991 15:01

I have a problem, a pellet problem that is! The gentleman that runs
the grain store where I buy my supplies is always trying to convince me
to switch my birds from seed to pellets.

Taco was recently weaned on pellets and I've gotten both cockatiels
onto pellets also. The finches eat their pellets but don't seem
satisfied with them as a complete diet. The keets won't even look at
    the stuff!

My problem is: Which pellets are the best? My dealer used to sell
Scenic for about $2.00 a lb. and swore by its goodness. Now he sells
EXACT for about $5.00 a lb and swears that it so much better than
Scenic. He also sold Kellogs for about $2.00 per lb and is now
replacing all of that with EXACT for a much higher price. My birds are
going through this stuff like water. $5.00 per lb is quite high and at
this point I don't know that I am buying quality or fancy packaging.

Scenic - birds like it and its cheap enough to feed

EXACT - birds like it but very expense

Kellog - bird like it and its cheap enough to feed

Prety Bird - birds hate it and its expensive

Lafabres - birds dont care for it much and is priced in the middle.

Which is the best of all of these and have I missed any that I should
    be aware of?

My birds also get plenty of veggies to round out their diets.

Please help (before I go broke!)

    thanks,

    Jeanne

If I were you I would stick to the Scenic or whatever you have been
giving your birds to date. The all have the same main ingredients
and if you are supplementing with veggies, etc., then I wouldn't
worry. The dealer will always try to push whatever he is getting
the most profit from or is currently selling. When dealers change
manufacturers they will ultimately push that new product.

Scenic is a very good diet. As for trying to get the budgies and
finches on it, I wouldn't bother. they are primarily seed eating
birds and I would let them enjoy what they like best. Unless it is
to your advantage to get them changed, leave them be.

    Good luck!

I don't know where you live, but I think Northeast Discount Pet store
in Lowell, Ma. sells pellet food from bins by the pound much cheaper
than Exact. Exact is supposed to be real good though. That's what I
    use for babies.

I'm using Roudybush maintenance pellets. I had a vet recently (not my normal
vet) berate me for using that brand. She felt like Lafebre's was much better
and the proteins could be absorbed much better. You know, it's sometimes
real hard to tell if a vet is promoting some brand just because they stock it.
I left fairly confused. My macaw won't consistently eat lafebres, only
roudybush.

I have had several Vets tell me that Lefabres
is the absolutely best nutritionally sound
	pellet food.

	Unfortunately my Macaw HATES it!

Occassionally, in the evening, I put some in
his bowl pour pinecolada mix over it, and remove
any left overs in an hour or so. This is the
only way I can get him to even try the stuff..
