I have just gotten some finches a week ago.
I noticed last night that one of them is getting all of his
feathers picked out (on his head). He will sit there and let
the female do this. Is something wrong with this? Does anyone
know why it's happenning?
Also, his foot is not wraping around the perch. I notice that
it looks like it is swolen. It doesn't appear to be broken.
Could someone please tell me what I should do about these problems?
They are in a huge flight cage.
Thanks you very much.

Deb,
There could be a number of problems,
1) The male may not be a male
2) The female may want to mate but there is no nest
basket or box to accommodate her so she is taking
her frustrations out on the male
3) Male may not be compatible for her
4) Female is frustrated that male is not servicing her
needs.
5) Psychological problems, etc.
I suggest that you remove the little male immediately and keep him
separate from the rest for awhile to build up his strength. Then
pair them back together in a separate environment (another cage) and
hang a nest basket or box with ample nesting materials (i.e. , grasses,
lint, newspaper shreddings, corn peelings, etc - NO STRING) and they
may get along better. If not, get him another female companion.
Best of luck,
Denise
