581.0. "HELP! cockitel layed eggs w/ NO mate" by BONJVI::PIERCE (Let's talk dirty in Hawaiian) Wed Jul 31 1991 09:36

My Manager has a 13 year old cockitel. The bird has allways been
the olny bird in the house. She noticed the bird was acting funny and
she thought it was getting sick, so she was keeping a close eye on the
bird. Well last night her bird laid an egg and it looks like more are
    on the way!

Does this happen usualy? Can a cockitel lay an egg if she has
NEVER had a mate? Why after 13yrs is bird laying eggs?

    Please help.

    Congratulations!

But seriously, female birds *will* lay eggs when sexually mature.
The presence of a mate just ensure fertilization. (Note: Chickens
have been laying unfertilized eggs for quite a while now...)

So don't worry, all is well.

581.2But why after 13 years?VERGA::GIANCOLADonna GiancolaFri Aug 02 1991 10:435
Why would a cockatiel lay an egg after 13 years if it never did before?
What's the avg. life expectancy of this bird? I thought 13 years would
put it in the "old lady" category. I know parrots live long, long
lives, but how bout cockatiels? Are you saying that cockatiels are not
sexually mature until the age of 13?

Although most cockatiels lay eggs with or without a mate at sexual
maturity, some cockatiels need stimulation or a mate to lay an egg.
Apparently she finally got around to it! Who knows? According to
what I have read on cockatiels, the life expectancy can be around
20+ years if well taken care of.

Best of luck to the little lady!

    Regards,
    Denise
