| Hi,
Just saw your note from yesterday...I do not have the answer for you
but I would not hesitate to see the vet. I would not want to take
the chance.
Keep us posted on him...I was quite interested and good luck.

just to let all of you concerned bird owners out there know that i
took chewy right to the avian vet at tufts -- dr kaufman.
all in all she thought he was very healthy. of course while he
was there he didn't have the sniffles at all, but as soon as i got
him home he did. i called her back right away. she asked me to call
her in the morning to give her a status (this was monday).
she ran a culture on him and tried doing a blood test on him.
tried? well the poor tech. was holding chewy while the dr took
blood from his foot with a needle. all of a sudden "chomp!". we just
heard little sobs from the tech, "please...please get his beak off me"
it was terrible! well as the dr and i pried the little bugger off
of the tech the blood coagulated -- it was no good. i have to bring
him back for that one. serves him right though, her hand turned black
immediately!
anyway tuesday am, i called the vet. he was fine.
wednesday i woke up and went to check on chewy. runny nose. doesn't
it figure. i called tufts to talk to dr kaufman. she was on vacation.
i was a panicked mess. what to do, what to do? i considered calling
worcester bird clinic but i had just spent $102 at tufts. not long
after that dr kaufman called me at home from home... of course i wasn't
home though...our horses had a fight and i had to run up to the barn
to determine damages on the horse. i missed her. i called back
tufts as soon as i got home. they reinformed me that dr kaufman was
on vacation. well my horse was walking on three legs, my bird had
a runny nose (only first thing in the morning, i wiped it and it went
away -- just like the breeder told me it would) and i was depressed!
anyhow somehow someway it was night time and time for bed. i said
forget everything and start fresh tomorrow (4th of july -- emergency
visit -- yeh TRY to forget about it... anyway).
thank you dr kaufman -- she called first thing in the morning to see
how chewy was -- (i really like her!) . i told her that he had a
runny nose again pretty bad yesterday am and that his chest sounded
raspy. she said that the culture had something (undeterminable as of
yet because it wasn't developed enough) and that she wanted to put
him on medicine immediately. she stopped at tufts on her way to
the cape for her vacation to drop off a prescription -- which i shortly
after picked up.
he has been on it since thursday, and he is much better as a result.
of course i am missing a finger or two but what the heck.
pookie horse? not too sure, dr merriam came out on saturday.
he said that it should be healed 90 % by wednesday -- here it is
monday and he can't hardly walk still. wednesday my regular
vet, dr. butera is coming to take xrays. $$$$
if it is a bone chip -- well, it won't be good.
the continuing saga of parenting animals

| Greetings,
I needed a good chuckle (I'm sorry)..but I must say I did enjoy your
note. I think you need blue cross blue shield for your pets. In the
long run maybe it will be cheaper for you.
Your vet sounds like a darling...I just found one in Littleton for my
tiels and conure..been once to her for a checkup for the conure.
I found my conure in a pet shop..and he had been abused (not by shop),
I bought him and he is turning out to be such a big baby..loves my
husband to death...and I am the one who rescured him, cleans him. feeds
him. Oh Well..
Keep us posted..and have a good Monday.

glad to know that i added some cheer to the note file ---
let me just tell you this to add a few more laughs to the story...
(cause at a point you gotta laugh or your goin cry alot) while all
this nasty stuff was going on with the kids...i went out to eat and got
food poisoning or the honga konga kill u flu. i haven't been able
to eat in 4 days (at least i am loosing weight...i have managed
bread and crackers -- geeze, how'z a girl suppose to survive?
(especially an italian bred girl?))
don't you love it when everything happens at once -- then you are
free and clear for a while until the next building falls in on you.
by the way --
why is it when one person cleans birdie's cage, feeds them, cleans
them, picks up poo poo after then, teaches them, etc. etc. etc.
they love the one who does nothing but says nice birdie?
have a nice day?

Tina- I know what you mean. I do all the taking care of the birds -
and my husband is their favorite - except for Winston my African
Grey. I raised three of the teils from baby - and got them tame
and lovey - and then my husband took them over - now they glare
at me. Ofcourse with all the cage care and feeding - guess who
gets to do the nail trimming and wing clipping. I really think
that is why they don't like me any more. Actually - I am thrilled
that my husband gets along so well with the birds - that way I can
get more. Sadistic maybe?? I just love them all.
I also know what you mean about things all happening at the same
time. It's a long story - but we just decided to chock off the
whole year to a BAD experience!!!
Keep the faith AND your sense of Humor!

572.6 | "Gotta love it" | SOURCE::ADDY | Aeronica Chief | Wed Jul 10 1991 12:15 | 17 |
| Greetings,
How is baby cold, your "flu" and whatever else going on in your home.
I really think birds bond with one person..but that doesn't mean they
will not be friends with anyone else. My conure...loves my husband..
told him "it" (sex unknown) must be a misguided female.. In the Am
when he comes in..he hears the truck and starts pacing and squaking
like crazy...he walks over to Pedi and gets a kiss...pets him and all
is well. But the tiels...will let me hold and pat them...only when they
want to let him..will they do so.
This is all new to me..the larger birds..but I am enjoying.
Keep us posted on the trials of your day with birds...hee hee.

572.7 | chewy is fine but | AIRG::TINA | | Fri Jul 12 1991 10:01 | 37 |

the continuing saga....of life at the whitney's estate
well chewy is considerably better, and thank goodness, we only have two
more days to give him medicine. it is such a chore, and i think it is
part of the reason he hates his ol' mom. i have to do all the 'bad'
things, and daddy always rescues the little bugger.
we tried putting the medicine in his formula. then he stopped eating
his formula and just cried from hunger. he is slowly now eating his
formula again.
i have one big question. he hatched on april 2 so that makes him....
(april to may (1), may to june (2), june to july (3), 3x4=12+1)
13 weeks old. we have always been cutting him carrots, spinach, green
beans, making toast for him, and baking a potato, but when he went off
his medicine food he went nuts eating all of this plus seeds. is 13
weeks a good age to be weaned?
t
ps pookie horse is fine -- he only tore a muscle and will be out of
commission for 4 to 16 weeks -- i won't have to put him down or
anything.
me? well, after 6 days of clear fluids, i am finally eating again.
thank goodness! i thought i was gonna die!
i have noticed that pookie bird is sneezing -- he always sneezes
but it seems a little bit more lately -- i will have to watch him
for discharges
thank goodness, kitty and midget (bunnie) are knock on wood fine
have a nice weekend all --

hat's off to you, Tina. Keep up the good work. Glad to "see" chewy
and you and your horse are on the mend.
