557.0. "Feather Plucking?" by AKOCOA::LAJEUNESSE () Tue Jun 04 1991 13:52

I had a very strange thing happen this weekend and I was wondering if
any of you folks have had this happen.

I have owned a Congo Grey for over 4 years now. This was the first
time I have ever seen her do this.

I went away for the weekend. While I was at the beach my nephew took
care of the house the bird, dogs etc...

When I got home on Sunday night I looked into my Grey's cage and at the
bottom was the BIGGEST pile of feathers I have every seen. It was like
she had moulted over night. No primarly feathers, just the downey
feathers they have. At first I thought she had started feather plucking
(she has never had a problem with feather plucking before) but to look
    at her she looks fine.

What was this? Spring cleaning or something? Does anyone know?

    Thanks,

    Mark

Hi Mark. Odd, my cockies just plucked the heck out of their
underfeathers... But they've done it before, and I think they go
    through stages.

In your case, it may have been the stress of your grey thinking he was
abandoned by his person for a few days!

    Hi,

I agree with reply .1......We have had the same experience with our
Timneh African Grey, unfortunately. Their seems little that can be
done unless you want to get the bird a mate to keep it occupied
while you are gone (and there too ;')
