Last night I went to a breeder's house to view some Lutino Cockatiels. They were so cute... There were 5 babies, the oldest/youngest were 10 days apart and BOY, what a difference! I wouldn't of guessed that they were from the same clutch as I have never seen baby birds. The youngest was MUCH smaller then the older two, who were pretty filled in with feathers (the smallest was kinda nude..). My question is this: On Lutino Cockatiels, is there usually a bald patch behind their crest? The breeder said that was usual - but on other colors that I have seen - I have never noticed a bald patch... Is this because they were Lutinos? I am new at all this... (It doesn't say anything in my books except one of the things to look OUT for when picking out your 'tiel is NOT to PICK one with a BALD patch!! heh-heh-heh... Susan

I had a lutino, cute as anything, who just loved his little bald spot scratched! Sounds normal to me. -P

If you are not using the bird for breeding - or do not want "show" lutinos - No problem with a baldy. It is inherited and very prevelant in Lutinos. We have one and are crossing him with a Cinnamon. He is a doll -- but then so is my husband (bald and cute). And they do like it scratched!!!

The bald patches on the two older 'Tiels are rather small - but I did notice them because their feathers are not all in yet. So, this bald patch is permanent huh? That's ok... they are so cute anyway! Thanks for the info! Susan |
