528.0. "Beak feathers?" by TEMPE::BUTLER (WATCHIN) Thu Apr 04 1991 06:01

    Hello all,
I have a 8 week old Cockatiel that I bought at 3 weeks old, he is
coming along great as far as eating goes and he's vary playfull.
Two days ago I stopped hand feeding, and inspite of continiuos efforts
pablem food is stuck on his beak feathers, it is just stuck there in
clumps. I've tried washing it with no luck and I don't feel right
about pulling it off, is time all I have to rid Chip of this ugly
    addition to his face?
I have heard that letting him stay out of his cage alot will tend to
make him wild, I have a play ground set up for him that he loves and
lets him have his freedom, is this something I need to limit his time
to? Or can he enjoy free space without becoming wild?
My daughter is 28 months old and amazed at our new family addition,
so far it's been alot of fun for us all, he will walk around on my
shoulder and try to talk back to me. I'll take any good advice on
training or care for Chip, I've laerned alot reading through some old
    notes. Thanks Mike......Wingin it......

I have 5 tiels - they are out anywhere from all day to 15 minutes -
depending on if I am home. I do keep their wings clipped (that is
the secret) - and they are not "wild". In fact if I walk by the
tree or one of their cages - they will usually jump on my shoulder.
So - I don't think it hurts to leave them ou - just pay attention
to him. The food stuck is a lot of fun. You could try wetting a
washcloth and holding on the stuff while you scratch his neck to
    	soak it off.

    			Good Luck! And have fun!!!
