507.0. "Peking Robins info ?" by ALCTRZ::MAPPES_DO () Mon Mar 04 1991 15:19

Does anyone have any information on Peking Robins?
    (not sure of the spelling?)

We won them at our bird club meeting Saturday night.
We picked up a book on softbills. I do know that they
eat fruit and meal worms with a small amount of seed.
    They are beautiful birds.

    Any information is welcome.

My husband won them he can feed them ...the bugs of course
    yuck.

Hi ,

I used to have Peking Robins. The have such a wonderful
song. I used to love to wake up to their singing. I was
hoping to breed them but was unsucessful. The biggest thing
they require is a large flight! They are very swift flyers
and need lots of room to zip about. The flight I had them in
was 5 feet long by 4 feet deep by 5 feet high. I used to
by the canned bugs to feed them. They also liked apple mash
and bathed all the time, meaning I had to change their water
often. They are a little on the messy side. I would see them
also poking at cucumber and peas that I would also put in the
flight for the other birds.

Hope this helps!

    Karen,

Thanks for the info. I found the little devils taking a bath at
10:00 last night they crack me up. Of course I had just changed
their water. Right now they are in a cockatiel cage but as soon
as the aviary is built and the weather is warm enough most of our
birds will go outside. I did notice that they are about as messy
as Lories. I have not really heard them sing yet but I am sure this
weekend they will sing with the rest of my crew.
(about 1 hour too early for me on the weekend.) :)

    Hi Donna,

Another food you can feed the robins is the stuff for mynah birds...
comes in pellets that you water down (and change frequently!). They
are definitely fruit eaters and should have an abundance of soft food
(baby bird nestling food is a good staple to give them at all times,
but also has to be changed frequently because it spoils very quickly...
Abba, Topper, Roudybush, others have baby formulas that can be used
for this purpose when mixed up with less water than you would use to
    handfeed).

The robins need a lot of space to fly. They go nuts in small cages.

    Good luck.

    Linda,

Thanks for the info right now I have them in a cage that's about
20" by 15" I hope this is ok for now. My husband feeds them meal
worms and apple they don't like much else they also have a budgie
seed that they pick at. How often should I change the mynah pellets?
If I feed them at 06:30 can it sit untill 5:00 pm? The bird book
said they would like grapes but so far the ones I tried they were
not keen on. I also tried pear which they liked but they would not
try cantalope or nectarine's I hate to just give them worms and
    apples.

    Thanks for the info!
