The amazon I just purchased needs his supply of Dr. Lafaver's (sp?) avi-pellets (not sure if that's the right name either) restocked. I have no idea where to find this food. Anyone know? Also, does Dr. Kilgore in Littleton do wing clipping? I would definitely like to get his wings clipped in spring so I can take him outside. Thanks in advance Peggy

Maybe someone could help me out but does Wingsong aviaries sell this? You may want to call Fins and Feathers in Chelmsford Ma. They are extremely helpful and could probably get you in touch with someone who carries it. lisa

503.3 | Countryside Vet Clinic | AVIAN::KIRSCHBAUM | Have You Hugged a Parrot Today | Fri Feb 22 1991 12:55 | 31 |
Countryside Vet Clinic on Route 110 in Chelmsford carries all of the Lafavere (sp?) products, vitamins, avi-cakes, pellets etc. I also,take my Macaw to Countryside Clinic in Chelmsford for Wing and toenail cliping. They do a very good job, and know how to handle the bigger birds as well as the little ones. A word of caution about taking your bird outside in the summer... Avalon is "one-wing" clipped, and VERY tame, and I take him outside alot....but I ALWAYS put a leash on one leg.... I am sure that if something startled him, and he managed to fly to a tree etc...he would come back, but it really is not a chance worth taking... Plus, the wing feathers grow back more quickly then you ever realize. Fins and Feathers in Chelmsford carries Ferret Leashes, which work very well for the Macaw, and probabally would for Amazons, Cockatoos and Greys.... Also, speading of Dr. Lafavre's products, Countryside sells large bottles of the water-soluable type, much cheaper than the small bottles, same vitamins etc... Now, whether you personally choose to use water soluable vitamins, clip wings etc...is a choice between you and your birds... -dick

If you want to do some price comparison, check out Wingsong's prices ...they may or may not be better than Countryside's, but they are cheaper than Dr. Kilgore's (and you can usually just stop in rather than have an appointment, like at the vet's). Wingsong's number is 603-880-6383 in Merrimack, NH. /Linda

Thanks to everyone who made suggestions - I did get some at the Countryside vet in Chelmsford (convenient). Dick - I will be sure to heed your warnings about taking my amazon out in spring. I probably won't let him out of his cage except for in the screenhouse. Peggy

I was just reading an article in this issue of the NPA journal and the author was stressing how important "natural sunlight" was for birds.... I suspect that your amazon will really love the screened porch. Avalon always helps us with our spring chores around the house.. leaves, preparing the garden.... With his help, it only takes TWICE as long! -dick

Remember Vitalites can substitute for natural sunlight...and there are some other companies now producing full-spectrum lighting as well. For those of us without screened porches, they are the only real alternative. /Linda |
