Hi, I have a small problem. I have two moustache parakeets on male and one female they both jump off of me and run to daddy (I think because he has a real trerrific beard that they can preen) Bandit is the male and when Bob is not home I can pull him out of his cage no problem but if Bob is home Bandit will bite me he does not bite Bob at anytime unless he is sleeping. Both birds are about 6 months old. The female is a sweetheart and does not know what the word bite means. (Thank God!) Donna with a sore finger.

Hi Donna, Seems some birds who adopt us as their mates warn of us of "danger" by nipping the one holding the bird, and if the person approaching tries to touch the bird while on the other human's shoulder, watch out!! since the bird on the shoulder will 'protect' their chosen surrogate mate. A couple of our male birds do this...haven't had the problem with a hen yet, but maybe others will have some differenct experiences to report. My husband's pet blue-front Amazon used to be okay with me while he was not in the room, but would be territorial about his 'mate' (my husband), even from his cage with my husband sitting across the room!! If I passed too close to the cage the bird would try to get me. The bird is more used to me now, so the problem is almost gone. If you can, play with Bandit more when your husband isn't around to see if he will also partially bond to you. Good luck and keep us posted! Linda | |||||
