468.0. "Any Local Bird Shows This Winter?" by BAGLDY::SIPILA (Can I go home now?) Wed Dec 12 1990 08:54

Can anyone tell me if there are going to be any bird shows locally
    this winter?

I have never been to one, and probably would enjoy it. I have become
very interested in birds since Max and Maggie came into our home.
They are two extremely spoiled Zebra Finches!

    One more question -

Is there a pet store in this area that sells mealy worms?

Locally meaning - I live in Sterling and work in Maynard.

Thanks in advance for your help.

Most bird shows in the local area are held in the fall. I don't know
of any to date that are held in the winter. Due to the transporting
of birds in the cold weather I presume. Bird Talk magazine usually
lists upcoming bird events (within a 3 month window I believe.) It's
a good idea to check it out each month. The club that I belong to
(Birds Of A Feather - or BOAF) will hold its next show in September.
We are located in New Hampshire and have just moved our monthly meeting
location from Hampton N.H. to the Holiday Inn West, in Manchester N.H.
Starting in January. Bird clubs are alot of fun and you learn so much.
If there is a club in your area you may want to consider joining it.
You get to meet other bird enthusiasts and breeders.

A note of caution though: Birdkeeping is HABIT FORMING!!!!!!!!!

    Regards,
    Denise

Denise's answers about bird shows are on the money - it is *still*
technically the "show season", but winter shows are held in warmer
parts of the country. There will be an NFS (National Finch Society)
symposium in the spring that you might be interested in attending.
I'll post the info when I receive it.

    re: mealies

Do your zebra finches *eat* these? I have more than 30 zebras and not
a single one will touch them, although other species that I keep (owls,
waxbills, cutthroats, button quails) think they are *wonderful*.

Probably the closest place to you for buying them is The Fish Nook in
Acton. You may want to call ahead and see if they have them. Also,
Tropical Isle in Framingham should have them.

If your zebras don't eat them and you still want to give them a treat,
the real favorites for my zebras are hard-boiled eggs (boiled for 30
minutes, with shell crushed up and fed along with yolk and white),
broccoli, and french-cut green beans. (Watch out - mine will sneak the
beans into the nest and incorporate them as a (rather unsanitary!) part
of their nest if I don't watch them carefully!)
