Hi, I've been calling breeders for a week now because I'm still thinking of getting another bird. I must admit that I am more confused now than before I started. I'm now torn between the quiet and sweet Pionus and the talking and more demanding Timnah Grey. I have a lot of thinking to do before making a decision as to what it is that I really want from this new bird. Actually, getting one of each might solve the problem but that is totally out of the question with my hubby. As it is, he thinks that I've flipped my lid by considering "just one more" bird. Anyhow, after speaking with breeders they have all said that I probably won't be able to let either a Pionus or a Grey out to play with my two cockatiels. This really disapoints me as I think of all my pets as being one happy family and I see pictures of large and small birds together all time in the Bird Talk magazine. Is this relationship the exception? My two tiels are very jealous and it will break their hearts to see me playing with another bird if they can't join in. I don't know at this point what the correct decision is. Pionus or Grey or maybe nothing? Well, thanks for listening! Jeanne

467.1 | Beware endangering the gentle cockatiels... | CLOSET::COMPTON | Linda DTN381-0687 ZKO1-2/C21 | Wed Dec 12 1990 15:35 | 15 |
Hi Jeanne, I have two friends who have pionus and love them! The Timneh grey would probably be the better talker, but might be more aggressively jealous of other people and birds when it is with whoever it chooses as its surrogate 'mate' -- cockatiels are very gentle birds, for the most part, and wouldn't have much of a chance against a jealous pionus or Timneh grey (we had two of the latter -- their beaks can destroy everything from fabric to wood with amazing speed - heaven forbid they take a dislike to your cockatiels - they wouldn't last long). A suggestion: play with the birds in separate rooms so your cockatiels don't get upset? If you are contemplating a wild-caught (imported) pionus or Timneh grey, triple the cautions above.... I think all my bird talk around the house is getting to my husband. this morning when he awoke, he said "thank God I woke up when I did, I was having this crazy dream" So, I asked him what it was he was dreaming about and his reply had me laughing all morning. He said that he dreamed I came home from work one day and I had a large U-Haul behind the car. I asked him if he could help me unload it and when he did, lo and behold, there was a large cage in the U-Haul and in the cage was a large parrot! He was so thankfull to wake up! I figure I'm making progress with him because he called this a dream and not a nightmare! Jeanne (who still doesn't know what she wants next) |
