461.3 | Quakers are great! | RANGER::WIMMER | | Tue Dec 04 1990 12:29 | 20 |
| Hi,
I have a Quaker......
Teddy (nickname "Ted Vicious") is exceeding friendly to me, but bites
all my friends (hence the nickname). Really cuddly little bird, loves
to have his head scratched. They are parrakeets, not parrots (long
tail).
As for food, Teddy eats a variety of things. He likes peas and corn,
baked potato, pasta, corn chips, some fruit, popcorn, cheese,
chicken, broccoli. Hates carrots.....will clean everything else out
of the dish and leave the carrots. In general, pretty easy to feed,
seems to eat all day long.
Likes to be around people, screams if you leave the room. Great
personality.....makes "kissing" noises at me when I come home until
I come to see him.

461.5 | don't do it! | RANGER::WIMMER | | Mon Dec 10 1990 12:20 | 8 |
| I would definitely NOT put the Quaker in the same cage with the teil.
My Quaker tries to attack the cockatiels if they are out at the same
time. The cockatiel could definitely not defend itself against
the Quaker!!!!! Mine are close together in seperate cages, get
along fine that way, but not outside their cages....

461.7 | From "YANKEE" Monks in Conn. | ROYALT::PULSIFER | Doug @235-8128 | Thu Feb 21 1991 09:01 | 9 |
| I saw an article in the new Yankee magazine on Monk/Quaker parakeets.
It said there was a colony of about 100 living in Connecticut. The
article talked about some people loved having them there and others
didn't. They mentioned that they like to dive into swimming pools
during the summer. A picture of a lady of about 70 with a Monk cuddling
against her neck accompanied the article. It was supposedly one of the
wild ones. It was said there is one nest with about 100 birds.

Time to renew a 2 year old topic!
Today I went into Family Pet in Nashua and was
adopted by a Quaker. I have never fallen in love
with a bird so quickly. I managed to leave the store
without it but was back 30 minutes later! This bird
is nothing but a teddy bear! All it wants to do is cuddle.
Well his name is now Otis,(Ots for short), which makes him
one of the Quaker Ots :-)
The previous notes in this string say not to put one of these
birds with other birds. The lady at the pet shop who is very
educated in these areas said that would be true if this bird
was older. As Otis is only 8 weeks old she said it will do
quite well with the others. Obviously I will be watching very
closely!
I've looked through some of my back copies of "bird talk" but
can't find a reference to Quakers. She said they are good talkers
and will eat nearly anything. She also said that they have a strong
nesting instint that makes them prone to the theft of nearly anything
it likes for a pretty nest eg: pens, jewelry... She also said that
they are very hearty- so much so that some N/E states have outlawed
them because if they escape they are prolific breeders and will lose
the welcome of a community pretty quick,(I think a previous note by Doug
detailed one such incident).
Please- I'm looking for any info about this bird. I'm not
beyond begging ;-)

| It's been a while, but how is your Quaker. I have one named
Teddy...bet you can guess why?? They are great birds!!! My friends
call him "Ted Vicious" because he tries to bite everyone but me, but
he is really sweet to me. It's definitley true that they will eat
almost anything? (His nickname is piglet!). He always runs to his
dish to eat if he sees us eating anything...

My wife is currently looking for a quaker. Does anyone know of
any babies for sale or the name of any breeders ? She would prefer
not buying from a pet store.
