Last night my husband and I were shopping. There was a women in front of us with baby food and a darling little newborn. We had in our basket - strained chicken and turkey, Gerbers pear juice, Hi-Pro cereal, and some other "stuff". The lady asked how old was our baby. My husband pipes up with "We have a 1-1/2 year old and a 9 month old". He then wips out his wallet and shows her pictures of our 9 month old Cockatiel, and our 1-1/2 year old Blue Crowned Conure. She was not impressed - But the rest of the grocery store was in stitches. (I can not take that man anywhere!) My husband has really become a Bird Nut! (I was already there.) The Conure was almost given to us as the person who had him could not handle him and was afraid of him. Well - we have had Casper for 6 weeks now - and the bird is a changed fellow. He was also being fed only sunflower seeds. We have only been "into" birds for about 7 months now and are talking more and different. We've even decided to start breading birds in the next few years. (don't want to rush into things toooo fast.) I will relate more stories as time goes by - this is long enough. Now for the Thanks! This notes file has been a God send. We have learned so very much from all the different advice and stories. Of course the recipes are the greatest. Both our birds will now eat just about anything. Sam (the tiel) has really gotten so lovey and her feathers are looking just great. The biggest improvement was Casper. He is now the most beautiful green and the blue on his head really shows up. There are so many things in this notes conf. that have given us differnt approaches with both of our birds. (I only have 2000 more replys to read to get caught up!) THANKS!!!! Dora oUo

433.1 | Cute Story!!!!!!!! | CPSR2::SIPILA | Can I go home now? | Fri Oct 12 1990 12:37 | 18 |
Your story was soooo cute!!!!!!!!!!!! It sounds like my husband and I. We have two Zebra Finches who are refered to as "our babies". People look at us funny when we go into the grocery store and are looking at beet greens and brocoli and exclaim, "Oh the babies will like these!" This is our first experience with birds also. Our next "baby" will be one we can handle and teach to talk. Sounds like you "babies" are as spoiled as ours. Regards, Susan Sipila
433.2 | Can I have a couple of receipes? | TJT01::ARMITAGE | Fri Oct 12 1990 13:15 | 13
I have a ten week old teil and I'd love to try some new receipes on her since her breeder gave her only seed. Can you give me a couple of your teils favorites to try on my baby Tequila? Aren't they the biggest lovers? I've only had mine for 1 week and she flies straight to Mommy every time someone new walks in the room. Her favorite song I whistle for her is Tequila that's how she got her name. She'll cuddle right into my neck and little noises that I can't really describe but those with teils must know what I mean. It almost looks like she's smiling cuz her little eyes get all happy looking. Thanks! Lisa 8)
433.3 | Receipe for good stuff! | CSOA1::DIRRMAN | Fri Oct 12 1990 14:40 | 46
If you look at notes 10.21-.32 and 10.48-51, there are some receipes which I used - kind of. Here is what I make now: 1 cup Real rice (1/2 white, 1/2 brown) 2 cups water 1/2 cup rasins 1-16oz frozen corn, or mixed veg, or Broccoli (Sam loves the corn) 1-6oz of baby Pear juice (can use apple - but pear not as acidy) 1-6oz strained chicken or turkey 1 cup Hi-Pro baby cereal - also have used oatmeal 1-4oz jar of carrots or squash 2 TBLS Safflower oil (or sesame oil) Micro rice in the 2 cups of water for 15-20 minutes (large bowl). Add rasins half way through the cookin. Add slightly frozen corn to rice - will thaw vegs and cool rice, add strained meat,fruit juice, jar of vegs, and baby cereal. Stir well as you are adding things. Consistancy should be crumbly. Add more cereal if need be. Add oil last and mix well. Lightly oil 2 ice cube trays and pack the stuff in - then freeze. I usually have enough left for 6 muffins - which I put those paper cups in a muffin pan and freeze. The next day I remove to a ziplock bag. The ice cube size is perfect for a feeding - I split the muffin for two feedings. It really doesn't take long to make. This is a combination of the receipes that are in the previous notes - but they had some things you may wish to add (bulger wheat, wheat germ, hard boiled eggs) Thaw and then add vitamins at feeding time. Casper (the Conure) loves the rasins and usually steals Sams - but Sam steals the corn from Casper. They are so cute together. You might want to look at those notes in 10 as they give you good ideas about how to get the "babies" to eat this good stuff. Mine just took to it immediately - no problem. But keep trying if they are picky at first. Good luck and let me know how it goes! Dora oUo |
