423.0. "Myna" by SASE::SOULARD (W k L P?) Fri Sep 28 1990 12:52

I'm just curious..... is a myna bird a good pet? All I know about them
is from what I saw on Twin Peaks and Knots Landing. They are black and
they talk/mimic. I have 3 cats, but I still like birds. Anybody know
anything about myna birds? Am I spelling it right? I did a dir/title
and did not see any info, also nothing in keywords...... anyone?
Are they $expensive$? If I'm at the mall this weekend, I may view one
    at the pet shop....

    Thanks for any info...

I don't know too much about them, just from what I have heard and
read. No first hand experience. From what I understand is that they
can be quite messy and their diet consists of meal worms as well as
the staple foods (pellets, fruit, etc.).

As for their talking abilities, they can mimick noises and speak to
a degree, however it depends on age. The older they are the harder it
is to get them to talk. It is best to get one as young as possible.
There are a few varieties (I have heard of two) and I believe one
is better than another, but hopefully some other noter can give you
more info on it than I can provide. I have noticed that there are
usually a few Mynas for sale in the Want Advertiser, and most are
offered at low prices. I don't know if this is good or bad. Good for
a bargain, however bad if they are not very good pets.

That's about it. I will try to find some info in my past magazines
    and other books for you.

423.2Have you considered a Parrot instead?AIMTEC::SIMPSON_LFri Sep 28 1990 16:2436
I had a Myna once (Elwin).
Elwin could mimic sounds very well.
    He could talk too.
    I also have some Parrots
and was more impressed with their talking abilities than Elwin's.

Elwin was an Indian Hill Myna which I heard
was the best talker of the Mynas.

Denise is right. The younger you get the Myna, the better your
chances are of being able to handle him.
I purchased Elwin from someone when he was a year old.
She had gotten him when he was 4 months old and had
    no success handling him.
She had another Myna befor Elwin which she got at about 6 weeks
old and she said he was very swwt and loved
    to be handled.

In my oppinion, Mynas are very messy.
I suppose this is because they are fruit eaters.
    They eat fruit, pellets, meal-worms,
vegetables (if they are not too hard).
I also fed Elwin cook fish and chicken sometimes.

I gave Elwin up because of the mess and I got tired of cleaning up
    after him.
I am much happier with my Parrots.

    Hope this helps.

P.S. As far as price, here in Atlanta Ga.
I have seen Mynas for about $350.

Thanks for your replies, they were helpful. I will look into it, but I
don't like cleaning up messes, so I guess mynah's are out..... oh
well, maybe I can teach my cats to talk ;^)
