Can anyone tell me what the perfect size cockatiel cage is? My two are presently sharing a cage which measures 17 x17 x 24 high. I was thinking of getting them a larger cage but my husband thinks the present one is just fine. They do seem happy with their cage and they are let out of it each morning for at least a 1/2 hour and usually longer. They are then carried out to the patio for the day. Our living in Southern Arizona enables us to to this almost every day. Actually, if I get a larger cage it will have to be on wheels as I can just barely pick up and carry the one I now have. I guess I simply have this mental block about space and would like to give them as much as possible (within reason of course). At this point, I don't know if my wanting a larger cage is more for me than it is for them. Any opinions out there? Thanks, Jeanne P.S. has any one used the Tidy Home cages? They seem fairly spacious and claim to be the easiest to clean. Can anyone attest to this?

408.1 | Do They Like Their Cage As Is?? | CLOSET::COMPTON | Linda DTN381-0687 ZKO1-2/C21 | Wed Sep 05 1990 16:48 | 7 |
Sounds good to me, given that they get out each day for awhile. If the birds are used to that size cage, they might not even *like* a bigger cage. I switched an Amazon to a bigger cage once, and he continued to occupy and use only about the same area as his previous cage. I just gave a pair of Dusky conures a bigger cage, and they don't seem to like it. These birds all get out of the cages, as yours do, so maybe the extra space is not necessary or desireable? /Linda | |||||

Well, I gave in to my desires for a larger cage and bought Rosie and Sunny a nice new HOEI cage. It's 17 x 17 x 37 high which gives them about double the space they previously had. It's wonderful and they seem to like it very much. They spent all day climbing all around and exploring all the new perches and toys we also have for them. I'm happy with my decision to upgrade. Now, this gives me an extra cage. Gosh, I wonder what I can do with it? Maybe another bird! Actually, there is a method to my madness. This new cage is large enough for 3 birds and I am seriously considering buying a Crimson Rosella. With my extra cage I can rest assured that if the 3 birds don't get along I always have a place to separate them. Jeanne |
