396.0. "Could I have a problem here?" by SALSA::DEFRANCO () Thu Aug 16 1990 13:28
I have two birds (cockatiels) one is a male named Rosie and the other
is Sunny. I thought Sunny was also a male but then again I'm having
second thoughts.
Sunny is 6 months old and is sooooo quiet. He (or she) barely makes a
peep and won't whistle for the love of money. Rosie, on the other hand
makes more noise (peeps, whistles, words, etc..) than we ever expected.
Do all male cockatiels learn to peep and whistle or is this silence
and good indication that Sunny may indeed be a female.
Also, I wanted to mention that Rosie and Sunny share the same cage and
they are not the best of friends. Actually, they mostly ignore each
other but sometimes have small squables. We call it "beaking it out".
Not serious but nontheless adversarial.
Could this not so loving relationship be the cause of Sunny's quiet
manner? I've thought of getting Sunny his own cage or maybe a mate.
Sunny tries to be affectionate with Rosie but to no avail. Rosie just
doesn't seem to be a lover at heart.
I want Sunny to be happy and I suppose that I'm taking his quietness as
a sign on unhappiness although I may be totally off course if indeed
Sunny is a female. Then again, if Sunny is a female, why is Rosie so
indifferent toward him (or her?)
If I sound confused, it's because I am. As I said, I want both birds
to be happy but I really don't know what to do.
Thanks for your help!
Jeanne

How are they doing?

| Hi Linda,
Actually, they are doing much better. Although I may get a larger cage
so as to give them each a little more breathing room.
Rosie has had his flight feathers for almost the entire time that we
have had him and Sunny's are now just growing in. I think this new
found ability to fly is giving Sunny more confidence and Rosie doesn't
seem to be bugging him as much.
Now that they both fly (usually in different directions) they call for
one another, so I guess they can't hate each other that much. Right!
Thanks for asking!
