375.1 | SOME SUGGESTIONS | SVCRUS::BUCCIERI | | Mon Jun 25 1990 13:55 | 24 |
| Susan,
Do you know how old he is? If he is in the seven week range he
may need to have more assistance weaning. My Lutino was seven
weeks old when I brought him home and he wanted to eat only
from my hand. He would make a very annoying "I'm Hungry" sound
until he was satisfied. I had to give him baby food for another
week or two. It is also very important that you position his
perch low in the cage. Young cocatiels aren't usually very good
at getting around. The food and water cups should also be convenient
to the perch. Most of all if you want a superb pet for a lifetime
handle and love him as much as you can. He is still young enough
to bond very closely with you.
This sulking behavior is not all uncommon. Actually he may just
be resting. Try some of these suggestions if you haven't already
and see if it makes any difference. If this lethargic behavior
is excessive and lasts for more than a week you may want to consider
getting him a check up. A good avian vet will have him perky in
no time.
Good luck,
Jim Buccieri

| HI, I thank you very much for the faast responce.
I called the store i bought him at (Seaworld in salem NH) and they
asked me to bring him (he was born there) to check his weight and
to see if he was hungry. Well to our suprise he took a full seringe
of food and was looking for more. The store asked to keep him a
few more days and make sure he was turned onto the seeds.
As for his sulking it seamed that he was just lonly for his nest
mates, as soon as we walked into the store he was all perked up
and was calling to the other birds.
Now i know that when i bring him home to give him more time to
adjust to not having other birds around and to love him to pieces.
One question?? if i did hve to feed him baby food how would i go
about it? with a spoon? where to get the seringe? how much?
i guess it is better that the people at the shop love there birds
enough to take them back and make sure they are properly taken care
of then some one like me who does not know much at all about such
a baby...
thank you very much
suzanne (the not so blue mother)

| I am glad to hear that things are better. All the questions you asked
in your last message are ones the Pet shop could answer best as they
are takeing care of the babies needs now.
Who are you talking to at Seaworld ? I believe a former member of this
conference is working there, Jean Hutchins. If so say "hi" for me.
