It was a close call last night. I guess we're back to square 1 again. When I got home last night around 9:00, my Houdini Mollucan, Rocky, was out of his cage and sitting on top of it. I use to put a paddlock on the door of the cage but somehow, it disappeared (I have looked high and low for this so I must have misplaced it one night). Since then, I have been facing his door close to Cochese's (Goffin Cockatoo) and right up against it so he can't get out while I'm in work. Well, somehow he opened it up and was on top of it (the door was only about 5" open so I don't even know how he fit out of it). I was rather tired (I get up at 4:00 a.m. and am working by 6:00). When Frank got home, I asked him if he could get the bird in the cage so I could go to bed without worrying. That's when it all started. Rocky decided to fly off his cage (his wings just got clipped 2 few weeks back) and soared down to the floor. That wasn't bad but then Frank tried to get him to go on his hand (he is the one that is NOT tame) and he just ran himself into a corner. Then, all of a sudden, he started screaming! I mean Loud!!! Frank wasn't even touching him at that point. I ran and got a towel. Frank picked him up with the towel and put him in his cage. When I looked at Franks arm, I saw blood with no cut so I knew it came from Rocky. I look at Rocky and he has blood coming from his beak! Then I look at the floor and there were drops all the way to the cage. I WENT INTO A PANIC! I know they can't afford to lose too much blood and was real worried! I told Frank to take the towel and try to get Rocky to put pressure on it with his beak to see if we could stop it. No go. Rocky wasn't being aggressive (which really had me going by then). I didn't have any of the quik stop powder so I immediately went into the kitchen to make a flour and water paste. In the meantime, Frank is still trying to apply pressure with the towel. He then took the paste but it wasn't staying on the beak to clot it. I told Frank to let me try (and you all know from my previous notes how scared I am of getting bit by this big guy). I tried and didn't even think about getting bit because I was too worried about losing him. I couldn't get it to stop. In the meantime, I had got on the phone and called Littleton to see if I could get in touch with Dr. Kilgore - another NO GO - answering machine. By this time I didn't know what to do. He wasn't bleeding as fast as he was before (he was being calm) but he WAS still bleeding. I got on the phone and called my brother and he pratically flew down from his house. I think he was there in 2 minutes but it seemed like a lifetime! He got there and I just told him that we should get Rocky out of the cage in a towel and apply pressure. Frank and him got Rocky out and I held the quik stop powder (which my brother had) and my brother put that on and applied pressure and it stopped the bleeding immediately! What a relief! As far as I'm concerned that Quik Stop powder is worth a million bucks. Word to the wise: DON'T EVER BE WITHOUT IT IF YOU HAVE A BIRD! Needless to say, I wasn't very tired after that episode. A nervous wreck maybe, but not tired. I stayed up for another hour to keep my eye on Rocky and then went to bed. This morning he seems fine. I found another paddlock and put that on his door! I haven't had alot of time to tame him down since I put my first note in (it just seems like the month of May is one thing after another). I guess I'm back to square 1 again because he was hissing at me again. I really think that he knows we were trying to help him last night (or he was becoming weak from the loss of blood). He kept his beak open while my brother applied pressure (and he could have bitten him if he wanted to). What a scarey feeling that was. Even though Rocky is not tame or friendly towards me, I still love him and would have been VERY VERY upset if I had lost him last night. I thank GOD for Quik Stop! Donna

Hi Donna, What an awful ordeal! I'm glad things seem to have come out all right. Just a quick couple of ideas in the unfortunate event there is a next time....use flour or corn starch AS IS...DO NOT mix with water. Keep applying to the bleeding area and apply pressure with a towel, as you did. Either of these also stings less (apparently) than the Quik Stop and later, when the bird is preening, won't introduce chemicals into his system (just my opinion here, but based on seeing the difference in reaction to Quik Stop and the natural flour or corn starch). ALSO, the Animal Emergency Service that is listed in the Yellow Pages is located in Acton, is connected with Littleton Animal Clinic and a bunch of others, and has ways to reach the vets that you and I don't. They got me through to Dr. Kilgore on an emergency in record time, and gave me good advice in the meantime. I'm writing from Galway, Ireland, or would look up the number for you. Hang in there. Rocky will tame back down after he recovers from the blood loss and general uproar, with your patience and love. Linda | |||||

Donna, what a horrible experience! I'll reiterate what Linda said - use just plain cornstarch. It seems to be as effective as Quik Stop, doesn't sting, and is *much* less expensive. Also, the Acton Emergency Service in Acton (I'll look up the number when I get home) has contact numbers for Littleton Animal Hospital. When Layla the Cockatoo bit SweetPeas's beak off on New Year's Eve, they got Dr. Seager (Dr. Kilgore's partner) down there to see Pea within an hour. Thank God! I can't say enough good things about the Acton Emergency Service and Littleton Animal Hospital. Rita |
