Hi, Does anyone out there own Plum-headed Parrakeets? I saw some at a show a while back and they were so beautiful, I'm considering getting a pair if I come across some again. I searched the notes file on "plum" and only got one note about a bird that was "plum tuckered out" 8-). I am interested in a bird that won't be very loud, but is animated and fairly tame. I would like a bird that would be easy to breed, but that is not necessary. I know that I would enjoy some budgies, but I am considering the plum-heads because they are such pretty colors. Any information on their special needs/qualities would be great. Thanks, Roseanne

303.1 | consider African birds? | MEIS::TILLSON | Sugar Magnolia | Tue Jan 09 1990 12:01 | 20 |
I don't know much about Plums, but... > I am interested in a bird that won't be very loud, but is animated > and fairly tame. I would like a bird that would be easy to breed, but that > is not necessary. If these are your requirements, you might want to consider a handfed Pionus or Senegal. These are African parrots which are gentle, quiet, beautiful to look at, and if handfed, are very affectionate. They can learn to talk quite well. They are on the smallish side of medium-sized - about the size of a Timneh African Grey. I have read that Senegals, in addition, are among the easier medium-sized hookbills to breed (I'm considering getting some for breeding myself) and do not require a large outdoor aviary to reproduce, but will do fine in a decently sized cage with an appropriate nest box. I seem to recall an article about Plum heads recently in Bird Talk. You might want to check back about 4-5 issues... Ed

Really? I started getting Bird Talk only about 4 issues ago and I haven't seen the article. I must have just missed it! Maybe I can track that issue down at the library. Thanks! Roseanne
